Box Score The Comets Men's Basketball team looked to upset the #22 ranked Valley City Vikings on Wednesday. A 9-0 run to end the first half gave Valley the cushion it needed in an 87-82 win.
The Comets got out to an early 6-1 lead, only to see the Vikings score the next 12 points to trail early. Mayville clawed back to tie the game at 16 with 11 minutes left. The game stayed close throughout the next nine minutes and was knotted at 34 with two minutes left. Valley went on the run mentioned above to take a 43-34 lead at intermission. The Vikings started strong in the second half and boosted the lead to 14 with 15 minutes left. The Comets scored the next 10 points to get within 4, Â The lead hovered between 4 and 8 until 15 seconds left when Mayville got to within a 3 pointer. However, the Vikings connected on four clutch free throws to hold off the Comets and win 87-82. Free throws were key in this game, the Vikings went 31/42 for the game while the Comets only hit 16/28.
Jamal Branco led the Comets with 21 points and 4 steals.
Chuck Robinson added 16 points and 10 boards,
Terrance Lockett chipped in 13 points, and
Jordan Villebrun grabbed 13 caroms.
For the Vikings, Jayden Ferguson scored a game high 31, Justyn Galloway scored 18, Darryl Howell added 15 and Ellwood Ellingson collected 10 rebounds and blocked 4 shots.
The Comets record now stands at 15-11. Mayville finishes their regular season slate Saturday against Jamestown.
