Box Score The Comets Women's Basketball team looked to generate some momentum in advance of the NSAA Tournament with a win over Valley City State. A late run gave the Vikings an 82-74 win.
The Comets were on fire from deep in the first quarter, hitting five of seven enroute to a 23-18 lead after 10 minutes. Both teams shot well in the 2nd quarter, as both teams shot over 50% in the first half. Mayville State held a 44-40 lead at half. Halfway through the third quarter, the Vikings went on an 8-0 run to take a three point lead. The teams traded the lead the rest of the third, and Valley City held a slim two point lead. The Vikings managed to maintain the lead throughout the fourth quarter and the hot shooting from 3 point land disappeared for the Comets. Valley City drained 5 of 6 from the line when the Comets needed to foul to win 82-74. The keys to the Vikings win were 52% shooting from the field while committing only 9 turnovers.
Andi Gayner poured in 27 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the Comets.
Jenna Lundon hit 18 and recorded 4 steals,
Joelle Ertl added 13 and
Karleigh Weber chipped in 12.
Liza Hoglo dished out 6 assists and collected 7 boards.
For Valley City, Georgia Williams filled up the boxscore with 23 points, 8 assists and 4 steals. Lexi Lennon added 19 points, and Courtney Dixon scored 12 and hauled down 6 rebounds.
The Comets record now stands at 15-11. Mayville State finishes their regular season schedule against Jamestown on Saturday.
