Box Score The Comets Women's basketball team wrapped up their regular season seeking an upset of the #8 Jamestown Jimmies. In a playoff-like atmosphere, it took a furious comeback by the Jimmies to escape with an 81-79 victory.
The first half was all Comets, as they jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter and used a 13-0 run to open the second quarter to lead 36-17 at one point. Mayville outscored Jamestown 20-8 in the second quarter to lead 43-25 at the half. The Comets were sizzling from deep, hitting 9/16 while the Jimmies only connected on 1 of 8 3 point tries. Jamestown came out of the break on a mission, hitting the offensive glass and getting the ball to Jessica Buck, who scored 16 in the third quarter alone. The Jimmies outscored the Comets 28-10 in the first eight minutes of the quarter to tie the game at 53. The teams battled back and forth and ended the third knotted at 60. The Comets grabbed the lead early in the fourth, only to see Jamestown come back to retake the lead. The Jimmies led 79-74 with a minute to play, but shaky free throw shooting kept the Comets in it.
Karleigh Weber hit a 3 with 22 seconds left to cut the lead to 1. Jamestown added a free throw and the Comets couldn't connect at the end of the game making the final score 81-79. The Jimmies hit 63% off their shots in the second half to nullify Mayville's torrid 3 point shooting in the first half.
Andi Gayner led five Comets in double figures with 18 points. Weber followed her with 17,
Liza Hoglo added 16 and 8 rebounds,
Jenna Lundon chipped in 12 and
Joelle Ertl contributed 10 points and 9 assists.
For the Jimmies, Buck finished with a game high 33, Taylor Hammer added 14 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks, and Kyra Dewald finished with 13.
The Comets end the regular season at 15-12, and willl find out their first round NSAA opponent on Sunday.
