Comets WBB Hold Off Dakota St as Gayner Reaches 1000 Points

Box Score The Comets Women's Basketball team returned home Friday to host NSAA foe Dakota State. Andi Gayner reached the 1,000 point plateau, and Naomi Torgerson scored or assisted on all 10 of the Comet points in overtime to defeat the Trojans 69-62.

Defense was the highlight of the first quarter as neither team shot above 36%. Mayville State got to the free throw line 10 times to generate enough offense to lead 13-10 after one. The offenses got untracked in the second quarter with Dakota State hitting four 3-pointers while the Comets used a balanced attack. With 4:44 remaining in the first half, Andi Gayner's basket got her to 1,000 points for her career. The Comets went into halftime clinging to a 31-29 advantage. The Trojans opened the second half on an 11-2 run to take a 40-33 lead and the Comets responded with eight straight points to regain the lead, and the teams were knotted at 42 going into the fourth quarter. Dakota State was able to maintain a slim lead through most of the 4th, but Sydney Gangl's triple tied the score at 59 and we headed into overtime. The Trojans scored the first three points of the extra period, but Torgerson took over with two minutes left, hitting two buckets, assisting on a third then sank four clutch free throws to ice the game, 69-62. After only making 5/10 free throws in the first, the Comets connected on 17/18 FT the rest of the game, nullifying the Trojan's outstanding 8/20 performance from the three point line.

Torgerson led all scorers with 22 points and added 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Gayner finished with 12 points, Claire Blascziek added 12 points and 6 steals and Cyan Hale recorded 4 steals.

For the Trojans, BreeAna Olson scored 18 points, pulled down 8 rebounds and added 4 steals, Britley Plautz recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards and Lindsey Vogl came off the bench to hit 14 points.

The Comets record now stands at 7-6, 2-3 in Conference. Mayville State welcomes the Bellevue Bruins Saturday, January 7th. Tipoff is at 3pm.
