Box Score The Comets Women's Basketball team took on the Bellevue Bruins on Saturday afternoon. The Comets broke open a close game by outscoring the Bruins 22-9 in the third quarter enroute to a 75-58 victory.
The Bruins jumped out to a first quarter lead, thanks to four 3-pointers and dominating the glass 13-6. After 10 minutes, Bellevue led 17-12. The Comets eventually tied the game midway through the second at 23, and from there, the teams traded the lead multiple times with the Bruins clinging to a 35-33 advantage going into halftime. Mayville State was on a 6/35 streak from deep over the last 3 halves so it was time for some triples to start falling, and they did in the third quarter. The Comets hit 3/5 3-pointers while holding the Bruins to 4/16 shooting overall and jumped ahead 55-44. Bellevue responded in the fourth by scoring the first seven points of the quarter to cut the lead to four, but the Comets slammed the door shut with a 18-2 burst of their own, and won convincingly 75-58. The Comets shot 48% from the field in the second half including 5/8 from the 3-point line.Â
Andi Gayner collected her third double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds,
Naomi Torgerson finished with 18 points and five steals, and
Karleigh Weber and
Alicia Nopola each added 11.
For the Bruins, Cassidy Hubbs led the team with 13 points and four blocks, Caletria Curtis scored 12 and grabbed 11 boards and Ryleigh McCartney finished with 12 points.
The win boosts the Comets record to 8-6 overall, 3-3 in the North Star. Mayville State hits the road next weekend for games against Viterbo and Waldorf.
