Comets Lose After Tough Fight

The Saints and the Comets went back and forth with each set on Friday night at Mayville State's Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. With the Comets winning sets 1 and 3, and the Saints winning sets 2, 4, and 5.

In the first set both teams were point for point until the Comets capitalized on the Saints errors and pulled away with a 25-21 win. In this set the Saints had 15 errors, with those errors and the 10 kills by Mayville the Comets were lead to victory.

In the second set the Saints got off to an early lead scoring 8 points right away, but that didn't stop the Comets from fighting hard to work their way back. The Comets caught up to the Saints but were never able to pull ahead of them. Jordyn Dekker was able to close the door for the Saints with a kill to win the set 25-23.

In the third set both teams battled point after point, until the Comets were able to score 5 in a row to make the score 16-9. The Saints didn't back down, they scored 3 points in a row and didn't stop there. They fought until the score was 22-24 but Hannah Bliss was able to put away a kill for the Comets to end the set with a 25-22 victory over the Saints.

The fourth set was a lot like the second set, the Saints pulled away early with a 6-0 lead. The Comets were able to put two points on the board, but the Saints answered back with a five point run. The Comets scored a few points here and there but were not able to catch up to the Saints big lead from the start of the set. Saints Jade Gallagher killed the Comets hope with a kill to end the set 25-18.

Everything was on the line in the fifth set, just like the set before the Saints took an early lead, scoring 5 points right away. The Comets battled back and were able to get the score down to a two point difference but the Saints would not let up and finished the match with two back-to-back kills. The first two were by Kayla Wolfe and Olivia Stet, the second were by Jade Gallagher and Olivia Stet. The Saints took the set with a score of 15-10.

Hannah Bliss led the way offensively for the Comets with 19 kills, and Olivia Stet led to Saints with 20 kills. Comets TaLise Hansen had a nice defensive night with 27 digs, as well as Joely Roe with 43 digs for the Saints.

The Comets continue action at home tomorrow afternoon and 12:00 PM, playing host to Bellevue University.
