The Comets faced off against the University of Jamestown Jimmies on Saturday afternoon, both teams looking to improve on their losing records. Jamestown came into the game with a 1-4 record in the North Star Athletic Association with a win over Waldorf University.
Neither team was able to get things going early on offensively, the first quarter saw both teams punting to each other and playing for field position. But, the Jimmies were able to get the scoring started on the first play of the second quarter with a Jimmy Hatch 1-yard touchdown run. The rest of the first half was a defensive struggle with both teams turning the ball over on downs and punting throughout the rest of the quarter, the Jimmies were able to grind the ball out on the ground while the Comets tried to establish an attack from the air.
The beginning of the second half saw both teams trade three-and-outs, the Jimmies were able to put together a scoring drive early in the third by attacking the Comets on the ground, running the ball down to the MSU 4-yard line. The Jimmies were able to punch it in on a 4th and goal pass from Jordan Mann to Nick Thompson to bring the Jamestown lead to 14-0 with 8:18 to play in the third. The Comets were able to respond with a nice drive into Jamestown territory, but Preston Hamlette (Philadelphia, PA) got stopped on a 4th and 1 on the UJ 34-yard line.Â
The start of the fourth quarter finally saw the Comets offense come alive and move the ball, Creighton Pfau (West Fargo, ND) was able to complete five passes on the drive to get MSU down to the six-yard line. Pfau was able to connect with Darrel Wilson for a score, Jonathan Rodriguez (Dallas, TX) was able to tack on the extra point to bring the game to 14-7 with 11:50 left in the game.Â
The Jimmies were able to respond right away with a nice scoring drive of their own. A pass from Jordan Mann to Branden Edwards for 26 yards set up Jamestown on the MSU 30-yard line. From there, the Jimmies were able to pound things out on the ground and move the chains. Allen Jevning was able to run in from ten yards out for a Jamestown score with 5:35 left on the clock.Â
Mayville State wasn't able to get anything going on their next drive, turning the ball over on downs near midfield. The Jimmies were able to capitalize on the good field position and march down for another score from Allen Jevning. The extra point was missed, so things stood at 27-7 with 2:22 minutes left to play.Â
The Comets were able to tack on a score with 26 seconds left with a Creigtion Pfau 1-yard rush to bring it to a 27-14 final.Â
Jordan Mann went 12-24 for the Jimmies with 123 yards and a touchdown and an interception, Creigtion Pfau went 27-52 for 242 and a score. Pfau also led the Comets in rushing with 28 yards and another score. Jamestown was led by Allen Jevning on the ground by going for 77 yards and two touchdowns.Â
The Comets face off against Dakota State next Saturday for the last home game of the season for MSU. Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM.Â
