MSU Falls to Rival VCSU

Box Score

The MSU volleyball team fell short to Valley City State on Wednesday night, with each of the four sets going down to the wire in an electric Lewy Lee Fieldhouse atmosphere.

It was close the entire first set with each team trading short spurts of scoring at times. VCSU was able to pull away late in the set and build a 23-19 lead, the Comets were able to battle back to make it 24-23, but a kill by Megan Johnson shut the door for the Vikings to take the first.

The second set saw the Comets jump out to a small lead with VCSU battling back to even it up midway through. It went back-and-forth until the end, with Makenzie Bring putting away a kill for the Comets to gain a 24-23 lead. But, the Vikings were able to take advantage of three straight attack errors by MSU to take the set, 26-24.

The Comets were able to come out aggressively after the two-game break and build an early lead in the third set. MSU was able to lead for most of the set, holding off a strong comeback effort by the Vikings late. Cassidy Miller and Hannah Bliss were able to score on back-to-back kills to close out the set for Comets, 25-23.

MSU led for a lot of the fourth set, as well. VCSU did a nice job battling back after the Comets jumped ahead early, they were able to answer each time MSU went on offensive runs late in the set. Hannah Bliss was able to put Mayville State on top 23-22, but the Vikings rattled off three points in a row with a key kill by Paige Benson taking the set, 25-23.

Hannah Bliss led the way offensively for the Comets with 17 kills, and Megan Johnson led the Vikings with 14 kills. TaLise Hansen and Mason Hart had nice defensive nights with 21 and 20 digs, respectively. Hailie Wilds was able to lead VCSU with 21 digs.

The Comets continue action at home on Friday night at 7:00 PM, playing host to the University of Jamestown.
