Comets Lose Regular Season Finale

The Mayville State women's volleyball team faced off against the University of Jamestown Jimmies this weekend in the final regular season game on the schedule for the year.

The Comets battled in the first set, keeping things close early. Jana Mehus provided an early spark to counter the Jimmies strong offense with two kills to get things started for the Comets. Cassidy Miller put away a kill midway through the set to bring the Comets within three, 8-11. Jamestown was able to come back with a string of points of their own, Isabel Wedell drove home two kills during a five point scoring stretch for the Jimmies to bring things to 16-8. Rumor Stokes and Hannah Bliss provided some late offense for the Comets, but the Jimmies closed the door on the first set, taking it 25-16.

The second set was much of the same story, the Jimmies were able to correct early mistakes and string together points to jump ahead 7-3 right away. Jana Mehus and Whitney Janu helped MSU stick around with kills from each to bring thins to 10-6. The Jimmies eventually found their groove and settled in, going on a 10-1 run in the second half of the set to put things out of reach for the Comets, UJ took the second set, 25-13.

The third set saw MSU play well early, but an early offensive surge from Jamestown had the Comets down 13-7. From there, MSU battled back and forth and never quit. Cassidy Miller started a 4-point run midway through the set with a nice kill, Rumor Stokes put another away to bring things to 18-15. The Jimmies would just not let MSU come all the way back, though. Haley Glasoe and Jessica Velander provided enough for the Jimmies late in the set to put the Comets away. The Jimmies took the last set, 25-19.

Rumor Stokes led the Comets with seven kills, Cassidy Miller provided six of her own. Jana Mehus paced the Comets with 14 assists, and TaLise Hansen led the team in digs with 15.

The Mayville State women's volleyball season ended over the weekend after the loss to the Jimmies. The top six teams in the NSAA advance to the conference postseason tournament, and for the first time since the conference was formed, the Comets did not qualify.
