Comets Fall to Waldorf

The Mayville State Comet Volleyball squad ventured on to Forest City, Iowa to contend with the Waldorf University Warriors for another North Star Athletic Association contest on Saturday afternoon. having played VIterbo the previous night, the Comets struggled to come back with a victory against the Warriors in a three-set match. Waldorf edged out the Comets in the first two sets with 26 to 24 and 27 to 25 victories, ending the match with a 25-12 win for the 3-0 sweep.

The first set saw Waldorf jump out quick with a  5-2 start, but the Comets fired back with a 10 to 3 run to take a 4 point edge over the Warriors. Cassidy Miller was setting the tone up front for the Comets on that big run with 3 kills of her own. The Warriors would bounce back and trade some blows with the Comets, but each team would find a way to keep it close and tied the set up multiple times. Waldorf was able to scoot by after a tie at 24 and take Set 1 away from the Comets.

In Set 2, the two teams kept it tight once again. Waldorf started with a 5-2 lead, but watched the Comets whittle it away with kills coming from Kiana Johnson as the Comets took a 7-6 lead. Victoria Johnson would help the Comets fight off another Waldorf run with 2 kills and a block to go with it. The set remained close with a few ties as Waldorf had a match point at 24-22. A service error and attacking error by the Warriors gave the Comets a chance to surge ahead for the win as the set became tied at 24. Another tie at 25 would cause more tension, but the Warriors secured the victory in the second set with two straight kills to take the 2-0 lead.

The third set had all the momentum in the Warriors favor. Waldorf got up early with an 8 to 2 lead to force a Comet timeout.  The Comets woes began with some attacking errors early and it continued on for them as the final set played out. It became too much of a hole to dig out of, with the Comets falling 12 to 25 in the third and final set of the day.

The Comets were led by Victoria Johnson and Cassidy Miller with 7 kills each. Jana Mehus led with 20 assists and recorded 10 digs for a double-double day.  Four Comets were in double figures on digs, with Jayden Warner leading with 18, followed by Natalie Hadrava with 11, plus Mehus and Mason Hart with 10 each. Victoria Johnson led the team with 3 blocks in the effort.

MSU now moves to 17-15 overall, 3-9 in NSAA play.  They will finish out their regular season games against Valley City State University on Tuesday in Valley City, N.D., then at Dickinson State University on Thursday in Dickinson, N.D.
