HAVRE, MT - The Mayville State Comets began their first game of the season on the road this year, taking on the MSU-Northern Lights out at Havre, Montana. Both teams were having great hopes for a great start on their year.
MSU-Northern came out of the gates strong in the first quarter, even after the first drive of Mayville State ended by putting the Lights on their own 5-yard line after a punt. They put together a big 95-yard drive that ended with a rushing TD by Jett Robertson. Robertson scored again on MSU-N's next drive and pushed the score to 14-0. The Comets continued to struggle in the early minutes, going 3-and-out early in the second half, watching the Lights score another time on a pass from Wilson to Pugh to make it 21-0. Late in the quarter, the Comets were starting to put together a nice drive that looked like the first score of the season was near. As the final seconds ticked away in the first quarter, the Comets were shy of the end zone by a few yards. They started the 2nd quarter with one more down, but failed to get into the end zone.
The Comets did not go scoreless in the first half though, as their next big possession turned into their first scoring drive of the season. Before they scored, a costly taunting penalty from MSU-Northern put the Comets in a good position which granted them a first down on the Lights' 29-yard ine. It helped put the Comets in a nice spot to score when QB
Creighton Pfau connected to
Trent Momon on a 29-yard touchdown the following play, making it 21-6.
MSU-Northern put together another drive that ended with the Lights scoring on a rushing TD from Jett Robertson again with 4:49 to go in the first half, turning it into a 28-6 affair. The Comets were not going to go quietly into halftime, as they worked on a great series that ended with
Creighton Pfau connecting on an 18-yard toss to
Darrel Wilson, plus the 2-point conversion to him, which made it 28-14 with 1:47 to play in the half. MSU-N struck back quickly within a little over the next minute of play, when Robertson had his third TD on the day to take the Lights ahead 35-14 at the half. The Comets had a very difficult time containing the Lights with their 400-plus total yards in the half.
The second half began in a back and forth battle, which saw 3 straight possession switches off of fumbles. The Comets first recovered a fumble by MSU-N, only to fumble it on their next play to switch it over to them. The Lights ended up doing the same thing, fumbling on their next play with the Comets regaining it. After that wild series of changes, the Comets put together a very nice run and finished it off with a Pfau to
Trent Momon connection on an 18 yard pass, making it 35-20 with 3:53 to go. However, the Lights managed the clock well and punched another TD into the end zone with no time remaining at the end of the 3rd, taking a 22 point lead into the final 15 minutes of play. MSU-N was able to tack on another score in the fourth quarter, making it a 49-20 win in the end for the Lights.
