The Mayville State Comet Volleyball team greeted the visiting Concordia College Cobbers from Moorhead, MN in another non-conference home game at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse tonight. The Comets came out with a strong edge once again and were able to get a solid 3-0 sweep over the Cobbers in some closely fought battles in each set.
In Set 1, the Comets were trying to set the tone of the game early and were able to jump ahead to a 6-2 lead. The Cobbers came back with a 6-2 run of their own to knot things up at 8, and the game would teeter back and forth with 5 more ties on the way to 14. The Comets were paced with strong kills from
Hannah Bliss and
Victoria Johnson, but the Cobbers were answering right back. The turning point in the set happened when
Cassidy Miller had three unanswered kills for the Comets, followed by another kill from
Natalie Hadrava to force a time out from Concordia. The Comets lead would build to 7 after a dump kill from
Jana Mehus and a nice blocking effort from Mehus and Miller. The Comets were able to secure this one by keeping the Cobbers at a distance in the 25-18 win.
Set 2 saw both teams keeping it close again as they inched their way to 5 each. The Comets were able to get into a little groove for an 8 to 3 run that saw
Jana Mehus with a kill, a service ace, and nice assists to
Victoria Johnson and
Natalie Hadrava for some kills to take a 13-8 lead. The Cobbers called a timeout to regroup, but the kills kept coming from the Comets side of the net.
Victoria Johnson,
Kiana Johnson, and
Cassidy Miller were the go-to attackers in the final moments of the set, helping the team collect 16 more kills on their way to the 25-20 victory.
For the final set of the night, the Cobbers put up a good fight in their attempt to go to a fourth set. They took an early 5-2 lead, but saw it whittled away quickly as the Comets went on a 4-kill run with
Cassidy Miller collecting 3 of them herself. The Cobbers fought back from that run and built a lead to as much as four, but a quick series of blocks from the Comets closed the gap, causing Concordia to call a time out with an 11-10 lead. Miller would become the go-to striker again, she fired off four more kills in a nice 6-0 run from the Comets to give them an 18-15 lead. The Cobbers would respond with a 7-1 run to go ahead 22-19, the game would become knotted up at 22 apiece after a service ace from
Jordyn Lucas and then both teams traded points to tie things at 24. A kill from
Natalie Hadrava lifted the Comets up one to take the 25-24 lead, then after a dramatic pause and a brief discussion by the refs, the last point of the game for the Comets would come off an unusual rotation error call on the Cobbers, giving the Comets the final point to win the set and the match. It was certainly an odd ending, but still a Mayville State victory at the end of the night.
It was a strong defensive night for the Comets, as the team had 77 digs in the contest. Leading the way in that category was
Jayden Warner with 22, followed by
Jacey Ross with 14 and
Natalie Hadrava with 12. The Comets had a great presence in the front row as well, with
Victoria Johnson and
Cassidy Miller recording 13 kills each, combining for 26 of the team's 45 on the night.
Jana Mehus had another solid night with 38 assists and 9 digs to narrowly miss a double-double performance. Miller also led the team with 7 blocks.
Coach Johnson was pleased once again with her team in another great performance at home. "It was another really great night to be playing at home! Our crowd has been phenomenal and it's great to have that kind of intensity and atmosphere in our gym. I thought we played pretty well and played really good defense. It was nice to get a 3-0 sweep in front our very supportive fans!"
The Comets lift their record to 9-7 overall, 0-1 in conference play. The next games for the Comets will be Friday and Saturday at home versus Viterbo University at 7 p.m. on Friday, and Waldorf College at 1 p.m. on Saturday in North Star Athletic Association action.
