After coming off a tough loss at home on Friday night, the Comets took to their home court once again on Saturday to face off against the Waldorf University Warriors. Waldorf proved to be the battle for the Comets, taking it to 5 sets to decide a winner with the Comets coming out on top in the end.
The game was close in the beginning, as the two teams knotted it up at 5 and 7 points. The Warriors would then go on a 4-0 run to force a timeout from MSU. Another 6-3 run by Waldorf would cause the Comets to once again call a timeout and get themselves resettled. They were being rattled a bit by Waldorf's Kyra Platzek, who had 3 kills in that collective 10-3 run from the tie at 7. The Comets would turn to their big hitters of
Cassidy Miller and
Victoria Johnson to help lift them out of the hole with Miller getting 2 kills and Johnson collecting 3 more. It got the Comets to within 2 points at 22 to 24. The Warriors were able to finish off the first set with a 25-22 win after a Savana Cordle kill.
In Set #2, it was a different ending and story, as the Comets took control very early with an 8-0 stretch to start things off and never looked back in the set. A series of 4 straight attack errors from the Warriors had them offset for a while in that 8 point run. The Comets were able to keep the pressure up with more kills from their front row and saw the Warriors offense continue to find their stride, as MSU ran away with Set #2 in a 25-13 affair.
The Warriors were able to regroup for Set #3 and put up a solid challenge for the Comets. The Warriors lead was only as large as 3 points until the Comets were able to knot it up at 16.
Natalie Hadrava for the Comets was finding her groove in this set, as she helped the Comets tie it up with four kills of her own. MSU took a small lead at 19-17, but Kyra Platzek was the hot hitter to turn to for the Warriors, getting 6 kills to help lift Waldorf over the Comets in the end, 25-21.
For the fourth set of the game, the Comets took control again early like they did in the second set, building up a 8-5 lead and forcing a Warrior timeout. They would extend that lead to 6 on a 5-2 run after
Victoria Johnson brought down the hammer on 3 straight kills, causing another timeout to be called by Waldorf. The Comets would keep that lead with a strong, balanced attack from
Kiana Johnson and
Natalie Hadrava, finishing off the Warriors in a 25-17 score to take it to the fifth and final set in the match.
The last set would be very tense on both sides, as it crawled along with 6 ties. MSU jumped out to a 10-6 lead and forced 2 timeouts from the Warriors along the way. The Warriors fought back to come within 2 to make it a 13-11 Comets lead, but a kill from
Cassidy Miller and a service ace from
Jayden Warner was enough for the Comets to take the victory, 15-11, and the match as well.
For the Comets, Head Coach
Lindsey Johnson felt they fought the ups and downs of the game well and found a way to stay strong until the end. "I thought that we started out a little slow today. But came back strong in Set #2. There were a lot of ups and downs in this match, but it was nice to see the kids fight to the end and get the win!"
