Volleyball Splits on Final Day in Montana

Box Score
Wrapping up a 3-day stretch out in Montana at the Fall Classic in Great Falls, the Mayville State Comets started the day off with a tough loss, but were able to bring home another win to end their trip out west.

#23 Montana Tech: 25-15, 19-25, 19-25, 24-26

The first match of the day was against #23 Montana Tech. The Comets came out with an edge in the first set, taking a big lead, going on a huge 15 to 4 run as they were able to take advantage of a series of M-Tech errors. The Comets were able to hold off a run by the Orediggers and sealed it up with a 25-15 win capped off with a Cassidy Miller kill to close out the set.

With the second and third sets, it was a different story for the Comets. Montana Tech got the best of the Comets on the next two sets with scores of 19-25.  To start the second set, it was close out the gates but M-Tech caused a lot of Comet errors along the way. MSU was able to narrow it down to one with M-Tech in the lead at 16-15, but the Comets had a hard time containing the #23 team in the country. Genesis Keith and Karina Mickelson closed the door down the stretch with back-to-back kills to give M-Tech set two.

In the third set, the Comets were once again unable to handle some big runs by the Orediggers. Keith and Mickelson were at it again, and Heather Thompson added seven kills in the third set alone. Errors from the Comets also contributed to MSU dropping the third set, seven of M-Tech's points in the set came off of Comet mistakes.

For the final set against M-Tech things were tied at six, then the Comets created some space on a 5-1 run with some offense from Hannah Bliss and Jaden Christianson to make it 11-7. A little more space was created to extend the lead to 5 at 15-10 after another kill from Christianson, but the Orediggers took the lead after six straight scores, including 4 kills and a service ace. The Comets looked to almost get the win in the set when it reached 24-21 in their favor, but a quick 5-0 run finished it off for the Oredigger overall victory.

"We came out so strong and it was great to get set one, we had a little lapse when Montana Tech picked up their level of play," Coach Lindsey Johnson explained. "We made some adjustments and were much more competitive to finish the match but unfortunately weren't able to come away with the win."

Natalie Hadrava had a nice double-double effort in the game with 10 kills and 11 digs. Hannah Bliss led the Comets in kills in the first match of the day with 12, Victoria Johnson added 8 of her own.

Montana State-Northern: 25-12, 25-13, 25-8

The Comets were able to come out strong and stay out ahead of the Lights in this one, taking all three sets in a row in a 25-12, 25-13, and 25-8 affair. As a team, the Comets had 37 kills compared to 24 for the Lights. Cassidy Miller had a strong game with 11 kills in the contest. Jana Mehus set it up with 29 assists in the match and Jayden Warner collected another 19 digs in the game. Mason Hart also recorded 2 service aces.

Coach Lindsey Johnson had some good things to say about the day's action and her team's performance throughout the weekend.

"This was a fun match! We came out strong, got an early lead and never looked back. We did some really good things and it was nice to finish the weekend on a 3-0 win. Overall I am very pleased with the weekend, we played some really strong competition and it was nice to see us compete at a higher level and have some success."

The win at the end of the day lifts the Comets above .500 mark with a 7-6 start. Their NSAA conference action begins this Wednesday with a match against Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D.
