Waldorf downs Mayville State in storm-delayed game

MAYVILLE, ND – Exactly 24 hours from the originally scheduled kickoff between the Waldorf Warriors and Mayville State University Comets, the two teams were able to square off on the gridiron, with Waldorf coming away with a 63-0 win at Mayville's Jerome Berg Field. The Waldorf win marked the Warriors' fourth win overall and second in the conference, while Mayville State suffered their fourth loss overall and second loss in the North Star.
"Waldorf is a team that is loaded with talented players, and when you play a team that is that talented, you can't play passively and wait for things to happen," head coach Jeff Larson said.
Sunday's game was originally scheduled for a Saturday kickoff, but, due to 20+ inches of snow blitzing the Mayville area, officials from each school postponed the game 24 hours, in hopes of achieving a playable surface on Sunday. Volunteers from the Mayville community came together to clear the field and the game was able to go on as scheduled.
It was all Waldorf from the get-go, as the Warriors took a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest on a four-yard run by Zach Morel, which capped off a seven-play, 64-yard drive. The Warriors extended the lead to 14-0 less than five minutes later, with Hilton Joseph finding Ryan Martinez in the endzone for a 20-yard touchdown pass.
The Warriors took the 14-0 lead into the second quarter and continued to drive down the field, scoring three touchdowns in the middle two quarters, extending the lead to 56-0 after three quarters.
The last Waldorf score came with 12:31 to go in the fourth quarter, when second-string quarterback Edward Dominguez found AJ Wiley, Jr., for a 31-yard touchdown pass, capping off a six-play, 66- yard drive.
Comets quarterback Creighton Pfau was 10-of-25 passing for 61 yards and two interceptions in the game.
Gino Musick led all Comet rushers with six rushes for 11 yards.
Four Comets were double-digits in the receiving category—Joshua Portillo, who had four receptions for 15 yards; Deadre Ford, one reception for 14 yards; Darrel Wilson, two receptions for 12 yards; Jacquante Pitts, one reception for 11 yards; and Austin Urlaub, one reception for 10 yards.
With the loss, the Comets fall to 1-2 in the NSAA and 2-4 overall.
They will travel to in-state rival Valley City State next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff, before returning home October 26 to take on the Dakota State University.
"We have a shorter week now and have to do a good job of moving on and getting ready to play a lot more aggressively against Valley City," Larson said.
