MAYVILLE, ND – Saturday's conditions at Jerome Berg Field were less than ideal—windy, cold and rain, at times. The Comets, however, looked to get past the weather conditions against a tough Dakota State team. Early, Mayville State looked like they were going to be in complete control, but it was Dakota State that came out on top, with a 35-14 win over the Comets at Jerome Berg Field, in North Star Athletic Association play.
The Comets took control early on a big defensive play by Timothy Rooks.
Torren Devericks was looking to pass to an open Trojans receiver, Rooks took notice. He read the pass the whole way, picking off the pass and returning it 90 yards for the touchdown, putting the Comets ahead 6-0 on a failed PAT by
Tim Martin.
Dakota State took the lead, and control, 7-6, ten minutes later, when running back Brodie Frederiksen scampered in, capping off a seven-play, 29 yard drive, which spanned three minutes, eight seconds.
Mayville State took the lead early in the second quarter, when quarterback
Creighton Pfau found an open spot down the field, taking the ball in for a 35-yard touchdown run. The two point conversion was good, and Mayville State took the 14-7 lead.
That's where the Trojans took over.
Frederiksen then had an 11-yard run with 10:30 left in the half, tying the game 14-14.
Just two minutes before halftime, Justin Folkers connected on an eight-yard pass from Devericks, on an 11-play, 80-yard drive, putting the Trojans in the lead 21-14.
Frederiksen finished the night off with a pair of touchdowns—the first, a 59-yard pass from Devericks, and the final, a 45-yard run with 11:10 to go in the game.
Pfau finished the game 21-of-39 with 199 yards passing and two interceptions. He was also the leading rusher for the Comets, with 21 rushes for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Joshua Portillo had five receptions for 58 yards to lead the Comets.
Devericks was 13-of-22 with 202 yards passing, two touchdowns and one interception to lead the Trojans.
Frederiksen had 18 rushes for 141 yards and three touchdowns, leading the ground game for the Trojans.
