DICKINSON, ND – The Dickinson State University entertained Mayville State in their final regular season game of 2019, and it was all Dickinson State from the start. The Blue Hawks scored 42 straight points, en route to a 56-13 win over the Comets in North Star Athletic Association football action Saturday afternoon at the Henry Biesiot Activities Center in Dickinson.
"Dickinson State is a well-coached team that did a good job executing their game plan," Comets head coach
Jeff Larson said.
With starting junior quarterback
Creighton Pfau out, head coach
Jeff Larson looked to sophomore
Tim Martin (Phoenix, Ariz.) to start under center for the Comets.
On Mayville State's first drive, Martin threw an interception on a pass intended for
Reese Hanson. The pass was intercepted by Trenton Rohr at Dickinson State's 36-yard line, setting up the Blue Hawks in good field position for their first offensive series of the afternoon.
The Blue Hawks capitalized, scoring on a 49-yard pass from Hayden Gibson to Conor McCarvel, capping off a two-play, 64-yard drive, that took just 21 seconds.
Dickinson State continued to dominate the remainder of the first half, taking a 35-0 lead into the locker room.
Scoring one more time in the third quarter, Dickinson State took a 42-0 lead before the Comets could get on the board.
With just over ten minutes left in the third, Martin connected with
Jacquante Pitts for a 60-yard touchdown on drive that lasted a single play and only 16 seconds. Mayville State trailed, at the time, 42-7.
One more Mayville State touchdown came with 6:49 to go in the game, when Martin and Pitts connected again, this time for a three-yard touchdown, on a nine-play, 61-yard drive that took just under five minutes in the fourth quarter. Mayville State trailed 49-13 at the time.
Martin finished the game 12-of-23 passing for 149 yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions.
Keon Suber had 12 rushes for 59 yards to lead the rushing corps for the Comets.
Pitts, who had the two lone Comet touchdowns, finished with six receptions for 112 yards.
The Comets finish the 2019 regular season with a 2-8 record overall, 1-6 in the North Star Athletic Association conference standings.
"We now have the off season to work out and recruit, so we can keep digging a foundation to turn Comet Football around," Larson said.
