MAYVILLE, ND – The Mayville State University Comets made it a full sweep of the weekend series against Lakehead University on Sunday, with a 3-0 victory over the road warrior Thunderwolves. The win marks the Comets' ninth win in a row, tenth overall, and third at home. Mayville State is undefeated in true home and away contests this season, with a 6-6 record on neutral sites.
"It was a nice ending to a long weekend," head coach
Lindsey Johnson said of the win on Sunday. "We had some lapses today, but I felt like we recovered very well and it was good to get the win."
Lakehead University, who came into Sunday's match having only played two matches, proved that they were much better than was shown on Saturday, as they stayed with the Comets throughout all three sets on Sunday afternoon.
Mayville State kicked off set one with a 7-2 run, sparked by back-to-back kills by
Elora Passa. The Comets came out hitting early, as five of their first seven points were via kills, with the other two being attack errors by Lakehead University.
Meghan Routier, who stood tall for Lakehead University, had a monstrous kill early, that brought the Thunderwolves to within three points.
Later, Mayville State took control, extending the lead to six amid turmoil defensively by the Thunderwolves.
Victoria Johnson did exactly what she was called upon several times to do, spiking the ball for a kill to put Mayville State up 15-9. That sparked some intensity from Lakehead University, who attempted to pull to within less than five, but the Comets were too much.
A six point run, with Mayville State starting ahead 17-13, put the Comets ahead for good in the final moments of the first set, and a
Hannah Bliss kill ended the first set, which was preceded by Rachel Sweezey's service error, setting up the Bliss kill on game point.
Set two was much different. Lakehead University came out of the set break with the momentum in the first points of set two, taking the lead 5-2 early on kills by Haleigh Kearns and Routier, matched with a block by Kearns and Routier. Staring into the deficit early, the Comets didn't fret—in fact, they fought back.
Down 16-11 midway through the second set,
Ashley Pyburn picked up a pass from Passa, finding a spot on the Thunderwolves side of the court, pulling the Comets to within four points. Passa then made it a three-point game with a service ace, probably one of the biggest of her early Comet career. That's not where Passa stopped either. With the rally continuing, Passa set up
Kiana Johnson, who slammed the ball home, pulling the Comets to within two points. Passa then made it a one-point game with her second service ace of the set.
Lakehead University would then pull away a little bit, but, with the Comets down 18-16, and
Jayden Warner at the serving line, the Comets pulled ahead, for the first time in the second set, with back-to-back-to-back points, making it 19-18 Mayville State. Lakehead countered with two points of their own, pulling ahead 20-19.
Then,
Victoria Johnson tied the match, only to be untied moments later on Abigale Green's kill on the serve by Bliss.
Five straight points from the Comets put the second set away, 25-21.
The third set was all Mayville State.
The Comets pulled out to a quick 13-2 lead, fueled by a 9-1 run by the Comets. Six of the nine Comet points came on Thunderwolves' attack errors. The errors continued, along with a couple of kills by
Kiana Johnson, Bliss and Pyburn, which extended Mayville State's lead to 17-6.
Late in the set, with a 10-point lead, Mayville State stole every bit of momentum, rattling off five straight points, making the game 24-9.
With their backs up against the wall, Routier and the Thunderwolves were able to get back-to-back points on kills by Routier, pulling them to within 13, but the run stopped there, as
Kaitlin Leier had the final kill for the Comets.
Victoria Johnson led the Comets with 10 kills and eight blocks; Passa had two aces and 31 assists; and Warner finished with a game-high 31 digs.
Mayville State improves to 10-6. They will enter North Star Athletic Association play this Friday against Bellevue at 7 p.m. at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse, and against Dakota State University on Saturday at 2 p.m., also at the Lewy Lee.
