The series…Saturday's matchup between the Comets and Warriors is the first ever matchup between the two schools.
Scouting the Warriors…Merrimack is 1-2 on the season, with their lone win coming at home, in their first game of the year, a 45-14 victory over Virginia of Lynchburg…The Warriors are coming home after back-to-back road games, which took them to Pennyslvania and Connecticut…The Warriors are members of the NCAA and the Northeast Conference.
Leading the Warriors…Dan Curran is in his seventh year at the helm of Merrimack's football team…Curran led the team through its first year in the FCS last season…
Comet Road Warriors…This weekend's road trip serves as the longest road trip of the 2019 season for Mayville State…The trip, if taken by car, is a 1,700 mile road trip to the eastern coast of Massachusetts.
Conference Play Begins…This week serves as the final non-conference week for the Comets, who participate in the NAIA's North Star Athletic Association…The Comets open up conference play next Saturday at Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D.
Quarterbacking the offense…Junior
Creighton Pfau (West Fargo, N.D.) is the starting quarterback for the Comets offense…Through two games, Pfau has racked up 123 yards rushing and is 45-of-66 passing for 672 yards and ten touchdowns…Pfau also has one rushing touchdown to lead the Comet offense…He is second in the nation in offensive yards per game (397.5)….fifth in passing efficiency (197.6) and also fifth in passing yards per game (336).
Air raid intact…The Comets have been going to the air a lot this season, racking up 689 yards of offense through their passing game…
Jacquante Pitts has 271 yards receiving and seven touchdowns for the Comets…
Darrel Wilson has 172 yards receiving with two touchdowns…
Joshua Portillo has the other Comet receiving touchdown.
Running through the trenches…The ground game has also been good to the Comets this season, as they have picked up 388 yards rushing on 84 attempts, led by Pfau's 123 yards rushing, with one TD…
Gino Musick has 19 rushes for 110 yards and two touchdowns.
Stacking the defense…Five Comets are in double-digits in the tackle department…
Josiah Walker leads the Comets with 17 tackles, 10 of them solo, along with 2.5 tackles for loss…Timothy Rooks is second with 14 tackles…
Ricky Flowers, Jr., has 13…and
Ben Dirks and
Travyen Brownlee each have 12.
Up next…The Comets open the 2019 North Star Athletic Association conference schedule next Saturday on the road in Aberdeen, S.D., as they take on the Presentation College Saints, a 7 p.m. kickoff at Clark Swisher Field.
