Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University football team dropped the final game of the 2020 fall season to Dakota State by a final score of 28-37. The Comets finish the fall with a 1-5 record.
The Comets forced a turnover in the first two minutes of the game deep in Dakota State territory and capitalized with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Josh Portillo to give the Comets a 7-0 lead. Six minutes later, the Comets took a 14-0 lead on a
Jason Nelson seven-yard touchdown run.
Dakota State would score the next 30 points, all coming in the second quarter to take the 16-point lead heading into the intermission. Dakota State would score one more touchdown in the third quarter to give them a 37-14 lead heading into the final quarter.
With 10:08 left in the fourth quarter,
Cole Dukart rushed it in from one yard out to cut the lead to 22-37. After multiple stops by the Comet defense,
Elijah Roundtree caught a touchdown from 12-yards out to cut the lead to 37-28. The Comets would have to try the two-point conversion but failed. The Trojans ran out the clock to secure the 37-28 victory over the Comets.
The Comet offense finished the day with 264 total yards, 50 yards rushing, 214 passing yards, and 17 first downs. Defensively, the Comets allowed 254 yards of offense, 125 rushing yards, 129 passing yards, and 18 first downs.
Creighton Pfau threw for 214 yards on 18 completions, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Cole Dukart led the rushing attack with 43 yards rushing, one touchdown, and his longest run was 22-yards.
Jason Nelson rushed for 32 yards on 14 carries and scored a touchdown.
Elijah Roundtree and Josh Portillo each caught a touchdown in the loss combining for nine receptions and 122 receiving yards.
Senior
Austin DeLaroque finished the game with a team-high 12 tackles (four solo, eight assists).
Josiah Walker tallied eight tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, and a fumble recovery.
Daniel Simpson recorded five tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, and 1.0 sack.
Adrien Pidgeon recorded an interception and three break-ups at his corner position.
