Mayville, N.D. - The Mayville State University Football team opens the 2020 season with a home game against Waldorf Warriors. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 PM at Jerome Berg Field. Due to COVID-19, Masks are strongly encouraged for all spectators and Game Management who enter Jerome Berg Field, Out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to limit the number of spectators to 50% of capacity in an effort to keep everyone safe and social distanced. The Comets finished the 2019 season with a 2-8 record and 1-6 in conference play. MSU averaged 23.8 PPG last season, averaging 334.9 yards per game total offense. They also threw for 238.2 yards through the air in 2019 with 98.7 rushing yards.
Creighton Pfau led the Comet Offense last season, averaging 240.8 yards in the air with 21 touchdowns. He also led the rushing attack with 119 attemps, 381 rushing yards, and 4 touchdowns.
Jacquante Pitts led the receivers last season with 51 recpetions, 729 yards, and 12 touchdowns.
Joshua Portillo finished the season with 35 receptions, 551 yards, and four touchdowns.
Cole Dukart finished the season with 37 attempts, 94 rushing yards and one touchdown in the 2019 season.
Josiah Walker led the Comet defense with 117 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks and two forced fumbles. Second on the team in most categories is
Austin DeLaroque, he finished with 98 tackles, one fumble recovery, and one forced fumble. Mayville State was selected sixth place in the NSAA Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Comets are coached by
Rocky Larson in his first season as head coach.
The Warriors finished the 2019 season with a 7-3 overall and 5-2 in NSAA play. The Warriors finished ranked 23 in the final pool of 2019. Jeff Jones led the rushing attack last season, netting 812 yards on the ground with six touchdowns, and 116 yards per game. Larry Whitfield was second on the team in rushing with 399 yards rushing and 12 receptions for 48 yards.
Hilton Joseph threw for 2355 yards in 2019 with 30 touchdowns, and six interceptions on 60.5 percent completion. Ryan Martinez caught 43 passes for 755 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Ryan Harrison was the next on the list with 26 receptions, 384 yards, and three touchdowns. Marcel Linder led the Warriors defense with 91 total tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss, 5.0 sack, and one interception. James Bell and Caleb Wilson each recorded 61 tackles in the 2019 season. Waldorf was selected third place in the NSAA Preseason Coaches' Poll.
