Comet Volleyball opens the 2020 season Saturday and Sunday

Mayville, N.D. - The Mayville State University Volleyball team opens the 2020 season with three games over Labor Day weekend. The first game is scheduled for September 5th at 12:00 PM against Dakota Wesleyan at Valley City. The Comets will turn around the next day and play two games at home against Valley City State and Hastings College. The games are scheduled for 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM respectively.

Quick Hit on the Comets:
The Comets finished the 2019 season with a 21-12 record and 9-5 in the NSAA. Finishing fourth in the conference and losing in the semi-finals to Viterbo. The Comets had two players that recieved NAIA All-American; Jayden Warner (3rd Team) and Victoria Johnson (Honorable Mention). MSU led the conference and nation in blocks per set in the 2019 season averaging 3.0 blocks. They also were in the top-10 in the nation in digs per game with 19.6.  Junior Victoria Johnson led the nation in Blocks per game with 1.7 and second in total blocks with 183 last season.  Sophomore Elora Passa finished second in assists in the conference with 8.2 assists per set. The Comets were picked fourth in the NSAA Preseason Coaches Poll with 42 points, Viterbo was picked first with 64 points. Lindsey Johnson is entering her 13th season as head coach for the Comets. 

Matching up with the Tigers:
The Tigers finished the 2019 season with a 20-12 record and 4-11 in the GPAC. Dakota Wesleyan was second in the conference in hitting percentage with a .237 percentage in 2019. They were also top five in blocks per set with 2.4 and first in  the GPAC with 20.6 digs per set. Danelle Burns finished the season with 360 digs and 27 service aces for the Tigers in 117 sets. Chaydon Metzger during her Junior campaign tallied 86 kills, a .198 hitting percentage. The Tigers were picked 10th out of 12 teams in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Coaches Preaseason Poll. DWU is coached by Lindsay Wilber in her seventh season as head coach.

Matching up with the Vikings:
The Vikings finished the 2019 season with a 5-20 overall and 1-13 in the North Star. Valley City State was picked eighth place in the North Star Athletic Association Coaches Poll. Sophomore Clair Weiland recoreded 103 kills and 25.0 blocks in the 2019 season. Junior Katie Juarez tallied 211 kills and 29.0 blocks, which is first and second on team respectively.  Kallene Klever was second on the team with 217 digs last season. Sophomore Caitlyn Fischbach led the team in blocks in 2019 with 37 total blocks. The Vikings are led by Bridget Greywater in her first season as head coach. 

Matching up with the Broncos:
Hastings College finished the 2019 season with a 11-15 overall and 6-10 in the GPAC conference. The Broncos were picked eighth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Coaches' Preaseason Poll for the 2020 season. Claira Thede led the Mustangs with 480 assists and 5.05 assists per set, Jaisee Stinson was second in both categories with 405 assists and 4.05 assists per set. Emily Krolikowski tallied 220 kills last season leading the Broncos. Second on the team was Lucy Skoch with 219 kills. Ireland Curry and Thede finished her 2019 season with 192 digs. The Broncos are coached by Alexandra Allard in her second season at the helm.
