Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Volleyball team came back from two sets to one to complete the Sunday sweep. The Comets improve to 2-1 on the regular season.
Game One:
In the first set, the largest lead was three as both teams created chances to take the first set, but the Vikings took the first set by a final score of 27-29. In set two, the Comets would have a 12-10 lead before the Comets went on a 9-2 run to take a 21-12 and take set two by a final score of 25-15.
MSU and VCSU traded points in the third set with the biggest lead being three. Mayville State took a 22-19 lead after an attacking error by the Vikings. Valley City would close the gap to one after an attacking error from the Comets.
The Vikings would tie the game at 23, the Comets would finish the set on a 3-1 run capped off by a kill from
Elora Passa. Mayville State would start the fourth set fast, starting on a 6-2 run. The Vikings would claw back and take the lead at 12-11. MSU would get the lead back and extend the lead to 20-15 off a service ace by Passa.
Victoria Johnson would put the finishing touches on set four and the match with a thunderous kill to give the Comets at 3-1 victory over the Vikings.
The Comets in match one of the day, finished with 50 kills on 165 attempts for a .133 hitting percentage. MSU would also tallied four aces, 14 blocks, 43 assists, and 90 digs.
Mason Hart led the Comets defense with 26 digs.
Amy Seim also recorded 20-plus digs with 22 in game one.
Victoria Johnson finished the game with 14 kills and four blocks.
Rachel Hill tallied 23 assists and one of the four aces for the Comets.
Ashley Pyburn tallied eight blocks in the first game to lead all players. Passa would finish with a triple-double with 10 kills, 16 assists, and 13 digs.
Game Two:
The Comets and Broncos went back and forth in set one, as they were tied at nine before the Comets wen on a 10-3 run to take a 19-12 in the first set. Hastings would battle back, rattling off six in a row to shorten the lead to 21-19. The Broncos would end up tying the game at 24 and eventually winning the first set by a final score of 28-26.
The largest lead in the second set was three, as Hastings forced a tie game late in the second set and MSU would take game two and tie it at one with kills by Passa and
Lily Pyle. The pivotal third set was tied at 13 before the Broncos rallied off six of seven points to give them a 14-19 lead. Hastings would finish the set on a 5-0 run to take a 2-1 lead.
The Comets would fight back in set four, as the Comets were down 20-21 before MSU scored the next five points to steal the fourth set and force game five. In game five it was all Comets; they started the set on a 9-3 run and did not look back. Winning the final set by a final score of 15-7.
Mayville State finished the game with 53 kills on 181 attempts, finishing with a .127 hitting percentage. The Comets also recorded 84 dis, 47 assists, 15 blocks, and five aces.
Victoria Johnson led all players with 20 kills. She also finished with 2.0 blocks.
Jordyn Lucas finished the game with 14 digs and Amy Siem tallied 20 for the Comets. Passa and Pyburn each finished the game with 11 kills. Pyburn also recorded 5.5 blocks. Pyle finished the game with six kills and 3.0 blocks in the victory. Hart led the Mayville State defense with 28 digs.
The Comets next home game is scheduled for September 15th against Presentation College. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm against the Saints.
