Comets drop in straight sets to V-Hawks

Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Viterbo Wednesday by a final score of 0-3. The Comets drop to 16-8 on the regular season and 5-3 in conference play.

The score went back and forth early as the V-Hawks and Comets were tied at 10 in the first set. The Comets up 14-13 Viterbo University went on a 7-0 run to take a 20-14 lead. MSU answered with two points in a row to cut the lead to 16-20 but Viterbo answered with three straight points to put the V-Hawks up 23-16. Mayville State would score five consecutive points to cut the lead to two.

After Viterbo got to set point, the Comets scored two straight points to close the gap to one at 24-23. Viterbo would finish the first set winning 25-23. Early in the second set, Viterbo was up 5-3 before a 6-1 run from the Comets would give them a 3-point advantage at 9-6. Viterbo would take the lead back after scoring eight consecutive points and taking a 14-9 advantage.

The V-Hawks would continue their five-point lead until Mayville State would fight off three set points and cut the lead to four, but it was not enough as the V-Hawks took set two 25-21. VU would start the third set fast, as they scored the first eight of the first nine points of the set. The Comets could not close the Viterbo lead, and the V-Hawks would win the third set 25-17.  

The Comets finished the game with 28 kills, 12 attack errors on 119 attempts for a .134 hitting percentage. The Comets also finished with two aces, eight blocks, 25 assists, and 68 digs. The Comets were led by Victoria Johnson, who surpassed the 1000 kill mark in tonight's game, finishing with 11 kills, and five assist blocks.

Elora Passa finished with seven kills, 13 assists, one service ace, and two digs. Rachel Hill tallied 10 assists and 12 digs in the back row. Mason Hart tallied 20 digs in the back row for the Comets. Amy Seim also tallied double figures in digs with 14. Ashley Pyburn finished with four kills and three total blocks.

The Comets are back in action on Saturday as they host Waldorf University and the #1 the University of Jamestown at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
