Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State Volleyball team dropped a tight five-set match against the #20 V-Hawks in the Semifinals of the NSAA Conference Tournament Tuesday night. The Comets drop to 23-10 in the regular season.
The Comets were up 4-3 early in the first set before a 6-1 run from the V-Hawks gave them a four-point lead at 9-5. A few points later, the Comets went on an 8-0 run to jump out to a five-point lead. The Comets went on another run shortly after to jump out to a 22-13 lead and looking to close the first set. The Comets were up 23-15 before a 9-1 run to tie the game at 24 and having to decide the first set in extra points. The game was tied at 25 before the Comets score the last two points of the set and take game one by a final of 27-25.
Mayville State was up 8-6 in the second set before a 4-1 run tied the game at nine. Later in the set, Viterbo scored six-out-of-seven points to take a 16-13 lead over the Comets. MSU would close the gap to one at 19-20 but could not complete the comeback and drop set two 25-22. Mayville State started the third set on a 10-3 run to jump out to an early lead. The Comets continued to hold their lead in the third set as the Comets had an 11-point lead at 22-11 and would win the third set 25-17.
The V-Hawks would start the fourth set on a 5-1 run and would jump out to an 8-4 lead. MSU would score the next four points and tie the game at eight and force a V-Hawk timeout. With the game tied at nine, Viterbo would go on a 3-0 run to jump out to a three-point lead. Viterbo up one at 14-13 would go on a 6-2 run to jump out to a 20-15 lead on the Comets. Mayville State would go on a mini 3-0 run to close the gap at two but could not get any closer as the V-Hawks would force the fifth set winning 25-21.
The deciding fifth set was tied at six before the V-Hawks took a two-point lead at 8-6. After a timeout from the Comets, MSU would score two straight points to close the gap to one at 12-11. Mayville State would fight off three match points to tie the game at 15 and would take a one-point lead at 16-15. Viterbo would score three straight points and win the fifth set and advance to the championship game.
The Comets would finish the game with 66 kills, 28 attacking errors, and a .161 hitting percentage. MSU also finished with 132 digs, 64 assists, 17 blocks, and one service ace. Three Comets finished with double digit kills, led by
Victoria Johnson with 18 kills, a .308 hitting percentage, and five total blocks.
Lily Pyle tallied 17 kills, a .304 hitting percentage, 1.5 blocks, and four digs.
Rachel Hill recorded 23 assists and 12 digs in the back row.
Elora Passa finished with a triple-double with 15 points, 39 assists, 13 digs, and 2.5 blocks.
Mason Hart tied her career-high with 51 digs in the back row.
Jordyn Lucas tallied 24 digs in the loss and
Amy Seim recorded 14 digs for the Comets.
