New Ulm, Minn. – The Comet Football team out-scored the Knights 18-6 in the final quarter but it was not enough as the Comets drop the final game of the season 39-31. The Comets move to 2-7 on the regular season.
Mayville State started the scoring on the first possession of the game driving the ball 50 yards in five plays to score the first points of the game on a 6-yard run from Cole Dukart (PAT Missed). Martin Luther answered with a touchdown on the ensuing possession to take a 7-6 lead. The Knights scored often in the second quarter out-scoring the Comets 26-7 and took a 33-13 lead into the intermission.
The Comets scoring drive in the second quarter went 4 plays for 50 yards and resulted in a Tim Salmon touchdown pass to Elijah Roundtree from 32 yards to tie the game at 13 with 12 minutes left in the first half. After no scoring plays in the third quarter, the Comets scored a touchdown within the first 30 seconds of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 33-19. Mason Ollman ran in the ball from one yard to score his first touchdown of the day.
After the Comets forced a punt from the Knights, Tim Salmon scampered for an 86-yard touchdown run on third and 10 to turn this game into a one-possession game under 10 minutes to go in the game. Martin Luther would create a huge scoring drive late in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to two possessions. MSU would answer right back with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Salmon to Reece Smith to cut the lead back to one possession. The ensuing onside kick was unsuccessful, and the Comets dropped the final game of the season 31-39.
The Comets finished with 202 rushing yards, 229 passing yards, 431 total yards of offense with three rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns. Tim Salmon finished the game with 14 completions for 229 yards, two touchdowns, and five interceptions. Tim Salmon led the rushing attack with 119 yards on eight attempts with one rushing touchdown. Cole Dukart tallied eight rushing attempts for 45 yards and one touchdown.
Mason Ollman recorded four rushing attempts for 23 yards and one touchdown. Josh Portillo tallied nine receptions for 102 yards. Elijah Roundtree and Reece Smith tallied two receptions and each recorded a touchdown. Defensively, the Comets were led by Josiah Walker with 15 total tackles and 1.0 tackles for loss. Trayven Brownlee recorded 12 tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss in the loss. Evan Martin and Stanley Lindsey each recorded seven tackles in the loss.
