Mayville, N.D. – The Mayville State University Volleyball team opens the 2021 season this week with five games in three days. The Comets will match up with Briar Cliff on Thursday at 5:30 PM followed by a tournament at Hastings College on Friday and Saturday.

The Mayville State University Volleyball team enters the 2021 season this week after advancing to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history.
The Comets dropped the opening round match against Midland University in straight sets to finish the season with a 23-11 overall record and finishing second in the conference with a 11-3 NSAA record.
Coach Johnson is entering her 14
th season as head coach of the Comets and tallying 259 wins during her time at the helm.
MSU finished the season with 1520 kills, a .177 hitting percentage, 11.3 kills per set, 9.9 assists per set, and 101 services aces.
Defensively, the Comets tallied 280.0 total blocks, 2.1 blocks per set, 20.2 digs per set, and recorded a .944 serve reception percentage.
Elora Passa enters her junior season after being honored with First Team All-Conference last season tallying 320 kills, 642 assists, 26 service aces, 77.0 total blocks, and 295 digs.

Ashley Pyburn was named Second Team All-Conference last season for the Comets finishing with 118.0 total blocks, 237 kills, and a .229 hitting percentage.
Jordyn Lucas returns for her senior year as a defensive specialist after posting 402 digs, 3.19 digs per set, a .927 serve reception percentage, and 14 service aces.
Previous Matchups:
The Comets are currently 3-1 in their last four matches against the Chargers defeating them on September 17
th last season in four sets.
Mayville State has won the previous three matches against the Chargers in the previous three seasons.
The first match at the Hastings College tournament is against Oklahoma Panhandle State out of Goodwell, Oklahoma. The Aggies are heading into the tournament with a 3-1 overall record.
The Comets and Aggies will meet for the first time in school history this week.
The second opponent for the Comets is host school Hastings College. The Broncos and Comets meet last season at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in September and the Comets pulled out a five-set victory.
The Broncos played at the KCAC Fling last weekend and posted a 4-0 record over the weekend. This was the only time that these two schools have met in the sport of Volleyball.
The first game on Saturday for the Comets is against Haskell Indian Nations University out of Lawrence, Kansas. This will also be the first time that these two schools meet in Volleyball.
This will be the first games of the season for the Indians after posting an 11-23 overall record and 5-4 in conference play in 2019-20.
The final opponent for the Comets is the College of Saint Mary out of Omaha, Nebraska. This is the first time that the Comets and the Flames will meet up in Volleyball.
The Flames enter the week with a 4-0 record after defeating Tabor College, Bethany College, Oklahoma Wesleyan, and McPherson College over the weekend.
