Comet Volleyball sweeps York and Bethel for 3-1 weekend

Peru, Neb. – The Comet Volleyball team picked up two wins on the final day of the Bobcat Invite defeating York College and Bethel College in straight sets. Mayville State moves to 9-4 overall heading into the first conference match of the season on Tuesday.

Game One: Comets 3, York College 0

Mayville State started the first set fast starting on a 6-2 run. York would answer right back on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to one before MSU went on a 7-1 run gave the Comets a seven-point lead. Lily Pyle tallied three kills during that stretch. Mayville State was only up one late in the first set when they went on a 6-1 run to take the first set by a final score of 25-19. Two blocks by Passa and Pyburn helped carry that run.

The Panthers and Comets were tied at seven when MSU went on a 3-0 run to take a small advantage. Later in the second set, MSU was only up one when a 5-1 run gave the Comets a 21-16 lead late in the second set. Mayville State would take the second set by a final score of 25-22. The Comets allowed a three-point lead to the Panthers before a 4-1 run tied the game back up at six.

York College would answer with an 8-1 run to take a six-point lead on the Comets in the third set. The Comets were down four in the third set when the Comets went on a 6-1 run to tie the game at 17. Kills by Passa and Hill started a 4-0 run to finish the third set 25-20 and pick up the sweep. Elora Passa led the Comet attack with 12 kills, 12 assists, seven digs, two blocking assists, and one service ace. Lily Pyle tallied nine kills, one solo block, and one blocking assist. Natalie Hadrava recorded 15 digs in the back row and Rachel Hill tallied 13 assists, seven digs, and one service ace.

Game Two: Comets 3, Bethel College 0:

Both teams traded runs early in the first set as the game was deadlocked at nine. After the Thrashers took a two-point lead, MSU went on a 5-0 run to take a three-point lead. A few points later, the Comets were up one when a 10-3 run finished the first set for the Comets. Multiple kills from Pyburn and Passa sparked the run to finish the first set.

After allowing the Trashers to score the first three points, MSU went on a 6-0 run to double up BC. Later in the set, the Comets started another run of 7-1 to break out an eight-point lead midway through the set. Bethel College would fight back and cut the lead down to three at 16-19 but MSU would finish the set on a run of 6-2 run to close out the second set.

The third set was tied at four when three kills from Pyle sparked a 6-1 run to take a 10-5 lead. A few points later in the third set, MSU went on another run, this time a 6-2, to take a seven-point lead midway through the third set. Just like the first two sets, the Comets finished the set on a large run to secure the second sweep of the day and three victories in Peru.

Lily Pyle and Ashley Pyburn each tallied 10 kills in the victory hitting .400 and .389 respectively. Emily Kaasa tallied one kill on two attempts off the bench. Natalie Hadrava recorded a team-high 23 digs in the back row for the Comets. Rachel Hill recorded eight assists, one service ace, and one dig for MSU.
