Comet Volleyball picked up two victories Friday afternoon

Bellevue, Neb. - The Mayville State Volleyball team picked up two wins at the Labor Day Classic against Southwestern Assemblies of God (3-2) and Hope International (3-0). The Comets move to 5-3 on the regular season and are currently on a three-game winning streak.
 
Game One:
The Comets started the match scoring the first three points of the game, but it was answered by a 5-2 run to tie the score at five. The Comets were trailing by three midway through the first set when the Comets went on a 4-0 run to take a one-point lead. The game was tied at 19 when MSU went on a 6-1 run to finish the first set highlighted by three kills from Elora Passa and a service ace from Jordyn Lucas.
 
SAGU started the second set down 7-3 early in the first set before they scored the next two points on hitting errors by the Lions. The Lions went on a 9-3 run to extend the lead to nine late in the second set and would take the second set by a final of 25-17. In the third set, the game was tied at 13 when SAGU went on a 6-1 run to jump out to a five-point advantage on the Comets.
 
The Lions would take the third set 25-19 and take a 2-1 set lead on Mayville State. SAGU was up 9-7 early in the fourth set when Mayville State went on an 8-0 run highlighted by kills from four different players to jump out to a 15-9 lead. Later in the fourth set, MSU would go on another run of 4-0 to open up an eight-point lead late in the fourth set. The Lions would go on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 21. After back-to-back points to take the lead. SAGU answered with two points to tie the game at 23.
 
MSU would score the next point to reach set point and then SAGU tied the game at 24. The Comets would take the lead back on a Passa kill but the Lions would answer right and tie the game at 25. A block from Richards and Pyburn and an illegal contact from the Lions gave Mayville State a 27-25 fourth set victory. The Comets started the fifth set fast as they jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and did not look back as MSU would win the fifth set 15-8.
 
In game one, Mayville State was led by Elora Passa with 16 kills, 28 assists, 14 digs, and three total blocks. Lily Pyle and Ashley Pyburn each tallied 10 kills and four total blocks. Rachel Hill tallied 18 assists in the victory. Natalie Hadrava tallied a team-high 21 digs for the Comets and Jordyn Lucas also tallied 19 digs.
 
Game Two:
Mayville State was trailing by two early in the game when they went on a 5-0 run highlighted by three kills and one block from Elora Passa and Cora Johnson. With the Comets up 11-8 in the first set, MSU went on an 8-1 run to double up the Royals. The Comets would finish the first set on a 3-0 run with Elora Passa putting the finishing touches on the set with a kill to win 25-15.
 
The Comets started the second set better than the first set with an 8-3 run to start the set highlighted by two kills from Samantha Passa. Hope International were trailing by five in the third set when they started a 6-1 run to tie the game at 13. Later in the second set, the Comets were down two at 18-20 and before a 4-0 run to take the lead. After the Royals tied the game at 23, a kill from Passa and an attacking error gave the Comets a 2-0 set lead.
 
Mayville State started the third set up 6-1 off kills from Lily Pyle and Ashley Pyburn. MSU would be up 11-4 before a 5-0 run to cut the lead to two. Later in the third set, MSU was up four at 15-12 when the Comets went on a 5-0 run to open an eight-point lead at 20-12. The Royals would fight till the end as they would get the set within five points, but MSU would close out the third set and pick up the sweep.
 
Lily Pyle tallied 13 kills on 34 attacks for a .265 hitting percentage with three blocks. Elora Passa tallied two kills on 27 attempts for a .296 hitting percentage with 26 assists, one block, and eight digs. Rachel Hill tallied 15 assists and 11 digs in the victory. Natalie Hadrava recorded 18 digs and Jordyn Lucas and Payton Richter each tallied 12 digs in the back row.
 
The Comets finish the weekend with Morningside College Saturday morning with the first serve to start at 9:00 AM.
