Mayville, N.D. - The Mayville State Student Athlete Advisory Committee, better known as SAAC, hosted a food drive for the May-Port Food Pantry this last weekend. Mayville State hosted five games between Saturday and Sunday and instead of admission, fans were encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item instead.
A packed Jerome Berg field for the football game against rival Valley City State, even with low temps, and a packed Lewy Lee for volleyball senior night and men's and women's basketball season openers made for a good turn out on SAAC's end.
SAAC, which is made up of student-athletes representing the various Comets varsity athletic teams, is to promote school spirit and provide outreach to the community.
The NSAA, of which Mayville State is a member, implemented the NSAA BOSA (Board of Student-Athletes) Cup in 2018, the Comets won two years in a row. The BOSA Cup is an award granted to the NSAA member institution with the highest number of BOSA Cup points, which can be earned through several different areas of BOSA and campus involvement.
Some of the main areas in which points can be gained include campus SAAC meetings, SAAC community service events, SAAC campus engagement events, campus team community service, involvement in NSAA BOSA initiatives, and NSAA BOSA representatives participating in conference calls.
Currently Mayville State is in second in the NSAA BOSO Cup race with 1,900 points, right behind Bellevue who has 2,150.
SAAC president and volleyball player Samantha Passa said, "Being apart of SAAC is super important to me and getting the opportunities to connect with the community and be involved is really exciting. I'm happy SAAC is taking the steps this year to reach out and find ways to get student athletes the chance to give back to the supportive community around us."
