Football Falls Short at Dakota State

Box Score Madison, S.D. - Comet football traveled to Madison, S.D. to take on the Dakota State Trojans to finish up their conference match ups. Mayville State was unable to get into the end zone in the second half as the Trojans escaped with a 19-14 victory.

After the Comets defense forced a three and out from Dakota State, the offense marched down the field. The key play was a third and 3 when Tim Salmon kept the ball and broke through the Trojan defense, running 37 yards inside the 10 yard line.

Two plays later, Salmon passed to Mason Ollman who rumbled six yards into the end zone. The Braeden Lacombe PAT was good and the Comets led 7-0.

Both defenses stiffened and no points were scored until the Trojans took advantage of a Comets turnover and completed a 72 yard pass play for a touchdown. The two point rush was stopped, and the Comets lead was cut to 7-6.

Mayville State responded almost immediately, when Salmon found Ethan Schnerch uncovered and Schnerch sprinted 76 yards to paydirt. The PAT kick was good and the Comets led 14-6.

The Trojans then went on an extended 12 play 69 yard drive and managed to find the end zone with 27 seconds left in the half. A two point conversion to tie the game was unsuccessful and the Comets went into halftime leading 14-12.

The Comets got the ball to open the second half but were forced to punt. Dakota State connected on two long pass plays, as the second play resulted in a 27 yard touchdown. The PAT gave the Trojans their first lead of the game 19-14.

The defenses then took over, and forced either punts or turnovers. The Comets were unable to convert a fourth down try at the Dakota State 29, and the Trojans missed a 37 yard field goal to go up eight.

The Comets last chance started with 2:14 left in the game with no timeouts and 79 yards to go. Mayville State was able to get close enough to midfield to throw a Hail Mary into the end zone, but the pass was knocked down and the Trojans held on to win 19-14.

"We had too many mistakes on the offensive side of the football today," commented head coach Rocky Larson.

Salmon led the team with 196 passing yards and 2 touchdowns as well as 50 yards rushing. Ollman added 44 rushing yards and the touchdown reception. Javeion Davison caught two passes for 60 yards and Schnerch hauled in the 76 yard TD. Devon Woods was the defensive star, as he collected seven tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack.

"We have one game left and have a chance to match or win total from last year. I am looking forward to an out of conference opponent in week 11. We get to see a new offense that will present some challenges," said Larson. "I am excited to work with this group one more week."

The Comets record now stands at 2-8, 2-6 in the North Star. Mayville State will finish the season at Jerome Berg field against the Martin Luther Knights, kickoff is at 4:00pm, originially set for 1:00pm.
