Comet Football takes down 4-0 Dakota State in Madison

Box Score Madison, S.D. – Mayville State University Comet Football took on the 4-0 Dakota State Trojans on a windy Saturday afternoon in a thrilling conference match up.

The game would be a close one, but the Comets would upset the undefeated Trojans 13-12.

"It doesn't matter how it looks, our kids are believing in the brand of football we are playing," said head coach Rocky Larson. "It's fun to watch our kids right now."

Defense would be the name of the game in the first half.

Early in the first, Hudson Stone blocked his fourth punt of the season putting the Comets in great field position at the Trojan 30-yard line.

"Another blocked punt by Hudson was a huge play in the game," commented Larson.

Dylan LaMont then threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Javeion Davison and Kaden Johnson's kick would be good to put Mayville State up 7-0.

The Trojans were able to respond early in the second quarter with a touchdown, but their extra point was short leaving the Comets in the lead 7-6.

With four minutes remaining in the half, the Comets had 1st and 10 on the Trojans 12-yard line when a hand off was dropped and Dakota State recovered the ball.

The Trojans would then complete a pass and go 51 yards down field to put them on the Comets 23-yard line.

Richard Shelton came up with a huge sack for a loss of 9 yards for the Trojans and Dakota State would have to settle for a field goal attempt, which was short.

Comets led 7-6 going into halftime.

The Comets received the ball in the second half, but the Trojans would get a stop in three plays forcing Mayville State to punt after only two minutes of possession.

In Dakota State's first possession of the second half, they would have back-to-back big yardage plays putting them on the 1-yard line.

Mayville State made two huge defensive stops, however, the Trojans managed to run it into the end zone to take the lead.

Dakota State went for two to make it a 7-point game, but their pass was broken up.

Trojans 13, Comets 7 with 8:45 remaining in the 3rd.

The Comets would be forced to punt on their next possession, but a Trojan penalty gave Mayville State a fresh set of downs.

Edward Norton ran for 12 yards and Jack Simmers then ran for 9, putting the Comets on the Trojan 30-yard line.

Ollman would have a couple good runs along with Norton, putting the Comets at the 2-yard line as time expired in the 3rd quarter.

With 4th and goal, LaMont threw a touchdown pass to a wide-open Maalik Flowers to take the lead 13-12. The Comets would go for 2 but failed.

At the 10-minute mark in the 4th quarter, Anthony Johnson made an interception midfield, but Mayville State would make nothing of it.

Not much action would happen on either side of the ball until Denzel Navy made a huge interception at the 2-minute mark down field.

The Comets would wind the clock down to 23 seconds and the Trojans would have two more chances to get the win but Mayville State would come away with back to back stops and get a huge win on the road!

Mayville State improves to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

This is the most wins by the Comets since 2016 [5-5 overall] and the most under the Rocky Larson era.

"We are looking forward to a long bye week to get healthy and get ready for the second half of season," added Larson.

Comet Football will have a much needed bye week next weekend and then hit the road on Saturday, October 19th, getting a rematch with #16 Dickinson State University.
