Mayville, N.D. - Mayville State Comets Football hosted their final game of the season Saturday night in a race for who would take second place in the NSAA 2024 football standings.
Mayville State welcomed the Dakota State Trojans to Jerome Berg Field for a late, 4:00pm kick off.
In early October, the Comets edged the Trojans 13-12 on the road in Madison.
In what would be defensive war between the Comets and the Trojans, the only score of the game would be in the opening drive of the second half where the Trojans were able to put up 7.Â
The first quarter wouldn't have much offense on either side. A key moment was when the Trojans missed a 31-yard field goal far left early on.Â
Kaden Johnson had a 24-yard fake punt run, showing off his athleticism by hurdling Trojan defenders.
In the second quarter, defense was still the highlight of the story.
Aiden Marcussen threw an interception in the first drive of the quarter.
Kaden Johnson responded by intercepting a pass for the Comets.
Quickly after, the Trojans would pick off Marcussen again.Â
In what would be a weird series of events,
Anthony Johnson would pick off the Trojans for the 4th interception of the quarter. 4 straight interceptions in 4 straight possessions.
At the half, the score would be tied at 0.
In the first drive of the second half, the Trojans marched their way down the field and scored on a 4-yard rushing touchdown. Their extra point would be good and lead the Comets 7-0.
In the fourth quarter, the Trojans had the ball in the red zone and scored a touchdown, but it was called back due to offensive pass interference.Â
The Comets' defense was able to stop the Trojans when they faked a field goal attempt and a Trojan was stuffed immediately.Â
Mayville State wouldn't be able to capitalize on the big stop and would be forced to punt.Â
In the Comets last attempt at tying the game, the Trojans would pick off a
Dylan LaMont pass and the Trojans would be able to run the clock down and get the road victory.Â
The Comets ended their season 4-6 and 3-5 in conference play.Â
Head coach
Rocky Larson and his staff celebrated 26 seniors Saturday.Â
"This is the first class we recruited. They set the foundation for what it means to be a Comet. They stuck with our program through the early days," said head coach
Rocky Larson. "The cool thing about the 26 seniors is they will all graduate. They were part of the group that changed our team GPA from a 2.11 five years ago, to a 3.09 current GPA. I am proud of everything they have done for Mayville State."
Even though Larson and his staff graduate such a big group, they look forward to returning players like
Devon Woods,
Anthony Johnson,
Kelby Azure,
Xyler Carlson,
Dante Frank, Daniel Sude and
Daniel Nevil.Â
Mayville State Comet Athletics would like to thank all of our Comet Fans and Trojan Fans that donated money and participated in the 50/50 raffle during Saturday night's game.
The winnings were donated to Comet Football Player,
