Mayville, N.D. - Mayville State University Football hosted Arizona Christian on Saturday for Homecoming & Farmer's Bowl at Jerome Berg Field.
It was a game of momentum swings, and Mayville State held their own against the nationally respected Firestorm. The Comets led twice in the first half, including a highlight-reel 94-yard kickoff return touchdown by Isaiah Smith, and held Arizona Christian scoreless for the entire second half. But despite a valiant effort, the scoreboard favored the visitors when the final whistle blew.
Mayville State opened the game with confidence and purpose. Quarterback Aiden Marcussen orchestrated an efficient 11-play, 85-yard drive on the Comets' first possession, capping it off with a 1-yard touchdown run to give MSU a 7–0 lead.
Arizona Christian answered quickly with a touchdown pass to tie it 7–7 — but the tie didn't last long. On the ensuing kickoff, Isaiah Smith broke through a seam in the coverage and sprinted 94 yards untouched to the end zone, restoring the Comets' lead, 14–7.
The Firestorm responded with back-to-back scoring drives in the second quarter. A short rushing touchdown by quarterback Josh Bell and an 8-yard run by Ty Cole flipped the score in favor of Arizona Christian, 21–14.
But Mayville wasn't finished. A late second-quarter drive saw Landon Olson power his way in for a 1-yard touchdown run. However, the extra point attempt missed its mark, leaving the Comets trailing by a single point at halftime.
That miss would end up looming large, as neither team found the scoreboard again.
Mayville State returns home this Saturday as they host Dickinson State University at 1pm at Jerome Berg Field. Previous scheduled time was 12pm, that has changed to 1pm central time. For full schedule details visit: https://msucomets.com/sports/football/schedule
