MAYVILLE, N.D. — Mayville State football put together a strong all-around performance Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Minnesota-Morris 37-13 at Jerome Berg Field.
The Comets overcame an early 6-0 deficit and quickly took control of the contest. Mayville State scored nine points in the opening quarter, including a 65-yard touchdown run by Darnell Green and a safety, to take a 9-6 lead.
Mayville State extended its advantage in the second quarter when Matt Donovan connected with Isaiah Smith on a 19-yard touchdown pass. Minnesota Morris answered with a touchdown late in the half, but the Comets carried a 16-13 lead into the break.
The second half belonged to the Comets. Mayville State opened the third quarter with a blocked punt returned for a touchdown by Luther Young, giving the Comets a 23-13 advantage. Green added his second touchdown of the afternoon on a 21-yard run later in the quarter to push the lead to 30-13.
Smith capped the scoring early in the fourth quarter, hauling in a 36-yard touchdown pass from Donovan to give Mayville State its final 37-13 margin.
Green led the Comets on the ground with 121 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries, including a 65-yard touchdown run. Smith added 76 rushing yards while also catching two passes for 55 yards and two touchdowns. Donovan finished with 66 rushing yards and completed 4-of-7 passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns.
As a team, Mayville State rushed for 358 yards on 53 carries, averaging 6.8 yards per attempt. The Comets finished with 422 total yards compared to 179 for Minnesota Morris. Mayville State also held the Cougars to just 42 net rushing yards.
Defensively, Rashawn Thomas, Seven Thomas and Comarion Anthony each recorded seven total tackles, while Anthony added two tackles for loss. The Comets also recorded a blocked punt that resulted in Young's third-quarter touchdown.
With the victory, Mayville State improves to 2-1 on the season and will return to action next week at home as they host Simpson University for their conference opener. The game is set for 2:00pm.
