GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Mayville State Comets put together a dominant performance Saturday night, earning a 34-0 shutout victory over Arizona Christian University at ACU Football Field. It was their first shut out in 3 years almost to the date.
After a scoreless opening quarter, the Comets broke through in the second quarter, scoring three touchdowns to take a 21-0 lead into halftime. Mayville State opened the scoring with a four-yard touchdown pass from Aiden Marcussen to Jack Simmers, capping an 11-play, 90-yard drive.
Marcussen added two rushing touchdowns late in the second quarter. The first came on a five-yard run following an Arizona Christian fumble, while his second came on a three-yard touchdown run with eight seconds remaining in the half.
The Comets continued to control the game in the third quarter, adding two more touchdowns. Landon Olson scored on touchdown runs of three and five yards, extending the Mayville State advantage to 34-0.
Mayville State's offense finished the night with 312 total yards, including 204 yards on the ground. Marcussen led the Comets with 81 rushing yards and two touchdowns while also completing 3-of-11 passes for 101 yards and a touchdown. Isaiah Smith recorded the team's longest reception of the night, hauling in a 55-yard pass, while Cameron Spaeth added a 42-yard reception.
Defensively, the Comets held Arizona Christian to just 138 total yards and six first downs. Arizona Christian managed only 15 passing yards on 12 attempts and was held out of the end zone throughout the contest. Mayville State also forced four Arizona Christian fumbles and recovered all four.
Rashawn Thomas led the Comets defensively with six total tackles, while Avery Rodriguez recorded three tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Orien Adargo also added a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
