Comets Battle Vikings in Four-Set Match

MAYVILLE, N.D. — Mayville State University volleyball opened up Frontier Conference play Wednesday night with a hard-fought four-set battle against Valley City State University, with the Vikings earning a 3-1 victory. The game was originally set to be played in Valley City, but due to gym issues the game was moved to Mayville.

The Comets pushed Valley City State throughout the four sets, narrowly dropping the opening set 29-27 before answering with a 25-23 victory in the second set. The Vikings edged Mayville State 25-23 in the third set and closed out the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth.

Mayville State showed its ability to compete at the net, finishing the night with 46 kills and nine total blocks. The Comets also held an advantage in service aces, recording eight compared to five for Valley City State.

Andrea Majchrzak led the Comets offensively with 13 kills while hitting .360 for the match. She also contributed four blocks to finish with a team-high 17 points.

Cadynce Dewitz added nine kills while hitting .227, and Destiny Thompson and Haley Johnson each finished with five kills. Kathryn Agnew added four kills and four blocks.

Zenna Krull paced the Comet offense with 16 assists, while Danica Hanson recorded 12 assists and contributed four service aces. Hanson also added four kills.

Defensively, Tori Richter led all Comets with 17 digs. Ada Pearson added nine digs, while Alivia Peterson finished with eight.

The Comets were particularly competitive in the first three sets. After falling 29-27 in the opener, Mayville State responded by taking the second set 25-23. The third set again came down to the wire before Valley City State secured a 25-23 advantage.

Valley City State finished with 51 kills to Mayville State's 46, while the Comets held a 9-6 edge in blocks and an 8-5 advantage in aces.
