Kyle Otineru enters his second season as assistant coach and his primary duty is to coach the offensive line. Otineru joins the Comet football coaching staff beginning in 2021 and will serve as the team’s Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator. Prior to Mayville, Otineru spent the 2020 season as the Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Moanalua High School in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Prior to his one season at Moanalua, he spent 3 seasons as the Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. During his time at SOU, Otineru coached 3 all conference selections and coached units that helped pave the way for offenses that ranked at the top of the NAIA statistical charts. Most notably in 2017, Otineru was a part of an offensive staff that helped SOU rank 12th in total offense, 10th in Scoring offense and 2nd in Passing offense on their way to a NAIA Semi Final appearance and top 4 final ranking.
Before working at Southern Oregon, he made stops at Buena Vista University (2017; Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line), Hastings College (2015-2016; Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line), Bethel College (2014; Defensive Line) and Linfield University (2010-2013; Offensive Line).
Otineru was an offensive lineman himself while playing at Linfield University. During his four years, the team went a combined 30-10 overall and was a national semifinalist in 2009. During the 2009 season he was part of an offensive line that ranked 19th nationally in sacks allowed per game (0.85).
A native of Honalulu, Hawaii, Otineru played his prep football at Saint Louis High School. He then went on to earn a business degree from Linfield in 2010 before obtaining a masters degree in physical education from Hastings in 2017.
Otineru resides in Mayville with his wife Valarie and their two daughters, Kyrie and Tianna.
