Before Mayville State:
Matthew is a transfer quarterback from Minot State University, prior to that he was a redshirt freshman at Bemidji State.

Before Minot State:
Matthew is a 2022 graduate of Kasson-Mantorville High School and is originally from La Crescent, Minnesota. He played both football and hockey all four years and also ran track for three. In football, he was 2x All-District, 1x All Area First-Team, 2x Captain and his team was Class AAAA State Runner-Up. He was a two-way player who totaled 1,637 passing yards with 23 touchdowns as a senior and 2,212 yards with 33 touchdowns through his career. In hockey, he was 1x All Area, 1x Captain and his team was 1x State Runner-Up. In track, he was a captain and holds the 4x100 school record. 

He is the son of Tina and Terry Donovan and has four siblings - Dylan, Riley, Ashley & Alex. His brother, Riley, played football at the University of South Dakota from 2013-17. Matthew plans on majoring in Criminal Justice.
