Sean Thom is entering his second season leading the Comets football program. Thom was hired on December 27, 2016 and came on campus shortly thereafter to assume his duties for the 2017 season. Thom and his staff did an excellent job of changing the culture which culminated in many positive changes throughout the football program. The Comet football team raised its team GPA from a 2.01 to a 2.88 over the course of his first semester on campus. Furthermore, the coaching staff was pleased to name 9 young men to the Dean’s List, as well as 1 gentleman to the President’s List (4.0). According to Thom, “The most important thing for us to do when we got our staff on campus was to change the mindset when talking about discipline and academic success. The expectation is that our young men will go to class, be respectful citizens of Mayville, and graduate with a degree.”
Before coming to Mayville, Thom served as Defensive Coordinator at numerous AAAAAA high schools in GA including Kennesaw Mountain, Gilmer, and North Forsyth. He also served as Head Football Coach at McCormick High School in South Carolina where they advanced to the Quarterfinals of the Class A SCHSL Playoffs. He kicked off his coaching career at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama where he served as the Defensive Graduate Assistant & outside linebackers coach.
Prior to his coaching career, Thom was blessed to have served as a member of the Faulkner University football team from 2007-2009. During this time, Thom was named a 3-time All-American over the course of his career (1 AFCA, 2 VSN Sports) and led the nation in tackles as a Junior. Also, Thom was a 3-time NAIA Academic All-American. At the conclusion of the 2007 football campaign, Thom was named the “Champion of Character” award winner for the Mid-South Conference. Prior to his football career, Thom played baseball at North Dakota State University under Coach Mitch McLeod.
A native of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Thom earned both his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Education in Physical Education from Faulkner University (AL).
