Lady Comets come up short at home against Viterbo University 81-70

The Mayville State University women's basketball team hosted the Viterbo University V-Hawks on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse. The afternoon game was a close, hard fought battle with the Lady Comets coming up short at the end of the game.

MSU came out playing tough defense with a variety of different looks to keep the V-Hawks off balanced on offense. Head Coach Dennis Hutter's defense was able to force the V-Hawks into 27 turnovers in the game.

Kira DeMorales led the Lady Comets with seven steals as she did a great job clogging passing lanes and demonstrated good hands with her steal total. DeMorales also did a great job getting offensive rebounds collecting four of them in the game as well. She did a great job creating extra possessions for the Comet women.

Offensively the Comets were led by junior Elixannette Cosme-Gonzalez who recorded a game high 33 points on 14-25 shooting. Cosme-Gonzalez did a great job finding ways to get to the basket through dribble drives and cuts to the hoop on fast breaks.

After Cosme-Gonzalez's 33 the Comets got 13 points from freshman Hailey Longtin and 12 from sophomore Laura Taylor.

This was a pretty tightly called game as the Comet women found themselves in foul trouble throughout with four players fouling out of the game. Viterbo took advantage of their many trips to the free throw line as they went 35-53 from the charity stripe.

The V-Hawks were led by sophomore Dani Templin. Templin, a guard from Richland Center, Wisconsin finished the game with a team high 24 points, six rebounds, and two steals. She connected on 16-20 free throws as she did a good job finding ways to get to the free throw line.
Jess Pavlinec finished with 13 points and Sally Colby added 11 off the bench.

Viterbo was able to hold off the Comets final comeback attempt by making their free throws and protecting the ball well at the end of the game. The Lady Comets fought hard in this one, but had an off day shooting from floor and fell short.

The next action for Mayville State University women's basketball is Friday, November 5th, 2010 when they travel to Sioux City, Iowa for the Morningside Classic. The Comets are now 0-1 on the season.
