Comet women fall to Division-II opponent University of Minnesota Crookston

The Mayville State University women's basketball team hosted Division-II opponent University of Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles. Jamie Zelinky scored 25 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and blocked 2 shots leading the Eagles to a 93-70 road victory.

The Comet women came out strong starting the game off on a 10-0 spurt to get out to an early lead. Crookston was able to stop the bleeding and not get run out of the gym within the first few minutes and took a 43-38 lead at the break.

Elixannette Cosme-Gonzalez scored a game-high 27 points, going 9-for-13 from the field and 8-of-11 from the free throw line. Cosme-Gonzalez also grabbed 5 rebounds, blocked 2 shots, and recorded 2 steals in the game.

Freshman guard Hailey Longtin followed Cosme-Gonzalez with 15 points.

The Golden Eagles had a balanced attack on offense in the game. After Zelinkys' 25 points was Brittani Wiese turning in 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Bri Zabel and Laurie Tyson recorded double-doubles in the game as well. Zabel finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds; Tyson had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles took advantage of their trips to the charity strip going 29-for-36 for an 81% clip. The Comets went 20-for-30 from the stripe. UM-C also held the advantage on the boards 45-34. The score at the final buzzer was 93-70 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

This game drops the Comet women to 0-5 overall, they will be off until November 23rd, 2010 as they take on Minnesota State University-Moorhead Dragons in an exhibition contest in Moorhead, Minnesota.
