Mayville State University junior guard Eli Cosme-Gonzalez tied a women's basketball scoring record with 39 points during a 100-93 overtime loss on Saturday, November 6th to Hastings College.
Cosme-Gonzalez was 16-of-25 from the field including and 6-for-10 from the free throw line to tie an all-time women's basketball scoring mark of 39 points in the contest. She added five rebounds and three assists to go along with the impressive scoring effort.
Former Comet All-American standout Cassie Leraas scored 39 points during the 2004-2005 season against Black Hills State University.
The Comets, who spent the weekend in Sioux City, Iowa competing in the Morningside Classic, faced No. 5 ranked Morningside on Friday and No. 21 Hastings College on Saturday.
Against Hastings the Comets trailed 43-45 at the half and outscored their opponents 38-36 in the second half to send the game into overtime. Hastings held on for the win in the overtime period, outscoring MSU 19-12.
Three other Comets finished in double figures during the high-scoring affair against Hastings.
Laura Taylor was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field to finish with 15 points,
Kay Laforet added 11, and Kira DeMorales chipped in with 10.
MSU will play next on November 16th when they travel to NCAA II Bemidji State University. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
