Comets lose another tough game to DI opponent

MSU 57, UND 74

Grand Forks, N.D. - Shavontae Samuels put up a game high 26 points on Tuesday night as the Mayville State University men's basketball team took on the University of North Dakota at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, N.D. But it wasn't enough, as the Sioux took the game 74-57.

MSU went into the game hoping to repeat the 73-61 victory that they had over UND last season. And the Comets put up a good effort. The Comets and Sioux traded the lead four times before UND used a nine point run in the first half to put MSU behind for good.

Samuels was joined by Dalonte Gibson with 12 points as the only Comets to reach double digit points. MSU's scoring was rounded out by Sean Greene with seven points, Ross Aman with five, David Slezak with four, and Wiley Jiles with three points.

The Comets shot 40% on the night, going 22-of-55, and were 9-of-15 from the charity stripe.

Samuels not only had a great scoring night for the Comets, he also led the team with seven rebounds, three assists, and had a steal on the night.

But UND used the offensive output of four players who reached double digits in scoring to put the Comets away. Jamal Webb and Aaron Anderson each put 15 points on the board for the Sioux. Troy Huff and Patrick Mitchell each contributed another 10 points for UND.

Overall the Sioux were 27-of-53 from the floor for an impressive shooting percentage of 50.9% and 16-of-20 from the free throw line.

The loss drops the Comets to 5-5 on the season. The Comets will return to action this Friday, Dec. 17 as they host Dakota Wesleyan University in non-conference action at the Lewy Lee Field House. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
