The first time Mayville State University and Dickinson State University met this season it was a low-scoring defensive contest. The second time wasn't much different, except this time the Comet women came out on top. The Comets defeated the Bluehawks by a final score of 57-53.
The first half of the game was definitely dominated by defense as the Comets were trailing 23-19 at the break. Offensively the Comets got going better in the second half as shots started falling.
The Comet offense was led by
Megan Groen. Groen, the senior from Danube, Minnesota scored a game-high 19 points. Groen also led the team in rebounds with six and steals with three. She had a good all-around night for Mayville State.
Following Groen were guards
Hailey Longtin and
Erin Ericson. Longtin finished with 11 points and Ericson had 10.
Points were at a premium in this game as neither team shot the ball as well as they'd like. Defense and timely offense were big keys in this game. One of the biggest plays of the game came from a Mayville State freshman.
Sabrina Rude, a guard from McVille, ND drained a deep three-point shot late in the second half to give the Comets a four point lead. The freshman caught the ball ready to shoot and gave the Comets a huge lift to hold on for the win.
Rude wasn't the only freshman to get time on the floor in this game.
Erica Amann,
Amber Montag, and
Erica Henrikson each found themselves on the floor in a close battle with a familiar opponenet. Amann was second behind Groen in rebounds as she finished with five on the night. The youth of Mayville State did a good job competing when they were on the floor.
Another key play down the stretch was a Dickinson State University player, Yianna Nadeau, receiving a technical foul with just over two and half minutes remaining in the game. That play really turned the momentum into the Comets favor.
Mayville State's defense was outstanding in this game. The Comets forced the Bluehawks into 29 turnovers on the night. This win was good redemption for the Comets from the first meeting just 11 days prior.
The Comets are now 13-9 in the 2011-2012 season. Their next game will be Saturday, February 4
th, 2012 when they travel to Valley City to take on the Vikings.
