MAYVILLE, ND – Through three games this season the Comet women's basketball team has managed to have five players hit double figures in scoring in each game. That balance has made them very difficult for opposing teams to defend as their 108 points per game scoring average can attest to.
The Comets were also in the middle of a fundraiser aptly named "Fighting With Jake" as the focus of the night was to raise money for the family of Jake Mueller as he is currently battling cancer. It was a great night of fundraising and support for the family.
There still was a basketball game and volleyball match to be played and the Comet basketball team took to the court first. Four of our five starters hit double figures and one more off the bench provided some scoring punch for Mayville State.
The Comets got out to a fast start against the Bobcats from Brandon University as they raced out to a 48-30 advantage in the first half. The Bobcats played hard and pushed the Comets in the second half as they outscored the team 48-44 in the final twenty minutes before losing the game 92-78.
The Bobcats relied heavily on the offense of Cassie Cooke, who scored a game-high 37 points on 12-of-26 shooting.
Liza Hoglo led the Comets in both points and rebounds and she finished with 23 points, 14 rebounds. She was aggressive in her drives to the basket as she found her way to the free throw line often and connected on 7-of-10 attempts from the charity stripe.
Marcisa McMillan also finished the game with a double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds for the Comets.
Sabrina Rude came off the bench to score 14 points as she was 4-of-8 from downtown and 2-2 from the free throw line.
Sam Heier finished the game with 12 points (4-for-5 3PM-A), five rebounds, and three assists.
Hailey Longtin was the final Comet in double digits with 11 points to go along with five assists.
The Comets shot 42.7% from the floor (32-75) which included 23 assists. Senior point guard,
Kay Laforet, who earlier this season eclipsed 200 career assists led the team with seven in the game.
The Comets big advantage in this game was offensive rebounds as they bested the Bobcats in that category 18-10. McMillan led the team with six offensive rebounds.
The team is off next weekend before they prepare for a pair of exhibition contests. On November 8
th the team will travel to Fargo, N.D. to take on the North Dakota State University Bison. They follow that up the following day as they take on Moorhead State University.
Mayville State University is now 3-0 in the 2013-14 season.
