Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | MSU Sports Information

Comets Win Again Over Pilots

The Mayville State Comets Men's Basketball team took to the court once again to take on Providence University College in the second matchup of the weekend at home on Sunday afternoon. The Comets cruised with ease to a victory on Saturday night, and it was a repeat matinee of the same show on Sunday afternoon. MSU had a nearly identical game and output against the Pilots, this time with a 120-45 victory and seven Comet men in double figures.

Max Cooper helped to set the pace right away with 2 quick baskets down low, plus another one to get the Comets up to a 6-2 lead. Gorg Alhag was also putting up some points soon after, as the two combined for 14 points of the Comets' first 24, jumping out very quickly to a 20 point lead. The Comet defense was stingy once again, limiting the Pilots to just 6 points in the first ten minutes of action. MSU kept up their rapid pace and safe delivery of the ball for the rest of the half to stretch the lead out to 40 at halftime, leading 59-19 at the break. In the first half, the Comets were making 2 out of every 3 shots, going 26 of 39 from the field, while taking advantage of the cold 25% shooting from the Pilots.

The second half saw much of the same style of play on both ends, with the Comets in cruise control and the Pilots struggling to find a way to the hoop, or in getting some shots to drop in. A host of Comets were coming in off the bench, each getting in some quality minutes and executing a nearly flawless Comet offensive attack. The Comet bench alone scored 66 points in the game. MSU shot even better from the floor in the second half, missing only 8 shots by going 26 of 34, including 3 out of 4 from behind the arc. As a team, they shot 71.2% from the field by game's end, running away with another win over the Pilots in the 120-45 contest.

Coach Darren Tighe was pleased again with the team's performance. "I was very happy that we came out and tried to be better than we were yesterday. Another great team effort!"

Leading the Comets in scoring was Max Cooper with 18. Following him in double figures were six more Comets: Gorg Alhag with 16, Rene Melendez with 12, Leon Williams and Daniel Lindgren with 11 each, plus Kentrey Bynum and Erick Staebler with 10 each. Staebler led the team with 8 rebounds, followed by Cooper with 7 and Alhag with 6. Kentrey Bynum grabbed 3 steals. In Assists, Kobe Critchley led with 8, followed by Michael Slaba with 7 and Daymarcco Green with 6.

The rebounding battle was won by the Comets as well, collecting 42 defensive and 7 offensive boards, while the Pilots were able to rebound 22 total in the game.

Jordan Lawson for the Pilots had a game-high 20 points, followed by teammate Christopher Dick with 11.

The next action for the 2-0 Comets will be up at the University of Winnipeg in Winnipeg, Canada for a weekend tourney on Oct 19th and 20th, game times to be determined.
