Make it two in a row for the Mayville State University Comets Women's Basketball team, as they defeated the Providence Pilots Sunday afternoon in a matinee matchup, 78-34, at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville.
Mayville State's scoring was consistent throughout the contest, scoring at least 20 points in the first three quarters. The Comets scored 17 points in the fourth quarter, en route to the victory. As was the case Saturday night, the Comet defense was stingy, giving up ten points in the first half, with seven of them coming in the first quarter.
Mayville State went on a run in the second quarter, holding Providence scoreless for more than five minutes, before they notched the final bucket of the second quarter, a free-throw by Natalya Reimer with 19 seconds left in the half.
Providence bounced back in the second half, scoring 11 in the third and 17 in the fourth, but it was Mayville State's offense that shined throughout the contest.
Two Comets were in double figures in the game—
Joelle Ertl had 15 points, and
Kylee Heurung added in 13. All but three Comets were in the scoring column Sunday.
Mayville State shot 42.6 percent from the field Sunday, while they shot 38.9 percent from behind three-point line. The Comets were six-of-nine from the free-throw line.
Mayville State (2-0, 0-0 NSAA) will have a few weeks off before embarking on an eight-game road trip, which includes stops in Jamestown (November 3), Fargo (November 6), and four Minnesota schools through mid- to late-November. The Comets road trip will end on November 24 and 26, when they travel to Florida to take on Webber International University and Warner University.
