The Mayville State Football team played host to the Dakota State Trojans on Jerome Berg Field on Saturday afternoon in a North Star Athletic Association matchup. Dakota State managed to jump ahead early and keep that margin throughout the game to get the win over the Comets, 28-19.
Things started out with a Comet fumble in their own territory, Dakota State took advantage and were able to put the ball in the endzone on a Torren Devericks pass to Mason Leighton for a 6-yard score. Both teams struggled to move the ball for the rest of the quarter with the teams exchanging punts and trying to take advantage of field possession.
Dakota State eventually managed to move the ball into the red zone and set themselves up for a score. With just under 8 minutes left in the first half, the Trojans were able to push the ball across the goal line with a Brodie Frederiksen run from the 7 yard line to make things 13-0 in favor of the Trojans. A Casey Bourque PAT made it 14-0.
The Comets responded nicely on the next drive, a reverse handoff to
Trent Momon sprung for 47 yards to set Mayville State up at the 4 yard line.
Preston Hamlette took care of the rest and plunged into the end zone to bring the Comets within a score after
Maxwell Scott added the PAT. Both teams exchanged turnovers and punts throughout the rest of the half until things were 14-7 going into the break.
The Comet defense stepped up on the opening drive of the second half with an interception from
Jelon Hilton, settting up the MSU offense on the 18 yard line. But, the Trojan defense responded with a stand and forced a 25 yard field goal from
Maxwell Scott to bring things to 14-10 in favor of the Trojans.
Dakota State put a drive together late in the third quarter that moved them down to the 4 yard line. The fourth quarter opened up with the Trojans pushing the ball across the goal line on Torrren Devericks quarterback keeper to bring to 21-10.
From there, the Comets would eventually get some field position and go up top to
Trent Momon for a 46-yard score.
Creighton Pfau connected with Momon with 9:35 in the fourth quarter to bring things within one score, 21-17.
The Comet defense was able to force a punt on the next possession by the he Trojans, but the offense was unable to take advantage. Dakota State was able to respond and put the ball across the goalline on the next drive and put themselves in a good position to win the game, going ahead 28-17.
A late safety was a highlight for the Comets after MSU was forced to go for a touchdown in the DSU red zone, then scored and pushed the Trojans back with their defense. But, the game belonged to Dakota State. The Trojans took the game 28-19 in a North Star matchup that could have gone either way on Saturday evening.
