The Mayville State Men's Basketball team wrapped up their busy weekend at home with another win on Sunday afternoon. After defeating Valley City State on Saturday, the Comets had to face off against the University of Minnesota-Morris on Sunday to try and make it a weekend sweep. After an early shootout of three-pointers on both sides, MSU was able to break away with a key 18 to 6 run in the opening minutes and continue to extend their lead further on as the game continued, capturing a big 94-64 win over the Cougars.
The Comets' first twelve points all came from three's and from only two players as the game began. UM-Morris struck first with a three, but it was answered back by
Jack Turnbull for the Comets. UMM hit another three, but Turnbull answered it back just as quick. Next was
Gorg Alhag's turn, as he hit two consecutive three's to take a 12-8 lead. From there, the Comets would go on that key 18-6 run to break away with a 16 point lead at 12:53 to go in the half. A timeout by the Cougars allowed them to readjust, as they came back with two three's to cut it down to a deficit of ten, making it 30 to 20.
Max Cooper began an 11 point run for the Comets to open things up even more, getting 2 free throws and a bucket, followed by
Creighton Pfau putting in 5 and
Eric Staebler with a bucket as well to get the 21 point lead for MSU. The Comets continued to be in command and held an 18 point lead as the half closed out.
A balanced effort of scoring from the Comets bench was another key in the second half, as six players ended the night in double figures for MSU. Another 17 to 9 run would build the lead further, and smaller runs throughout the rest of the half would be enough for the Comets to get their second win over the Cougars this season, 94-64 at the end.
Jack Turnbull and
Creighton Pfau were co-leaders and held game-highs of 15 each for MSU.
Daniel Lindgren had 14, while three more Comet had 11 each:
Gorg Alhag,
Max Cooper and
Eric Staebler. Staebler nearly had a double-double with 9 rebounds in the game, part of a collective total of 48 boards for the Comets. MSU shot well at nearly 48 percent from the floor, going 34 for 71 and 10-33 on three's. UM-Morris was held scoreless for the last 4:08 in the game, with MSU having its biggest lead of the game at 33 with 6:20 to play in the second half.
The Comets now move to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Their next game is this Tuesday, December 4th at the University of Mary out in Bismarck, ND for another exhibition matchup.
